Maybe the Yogster will be looking for the best deal on PorkChopBunsAwww, durians are a galore right now... both here and in Thailand where I was since this Thursday morning, I'm back now in Singapore after a dash drive from Bangkok to Hua Hin to see another Golf resort in the making...Absolutely Terrific!!!
But with durians, tasted both and somehow, the Singapore ones are delicious and before I left for Thailand, I could get the one fruit for $1 or $2,50 or $5,50 or even $15 for a whole thorny fruit...esp. the ones with the brown tip!
The seeds are very flat and smallish giving you a real bargain with the meat! I'll be back in Chinatown (invite by some old friends) for another durian treat during this weekend.
I will also be tasting Chilli crab, as a gift by the Country's Tourism Board to all visitors to Singapore between June 28th till end of July!!! A whole big dish of savory chilli crab (two large Sri Lankan pieces) is offered to EVERY visitor to Singapore at any of the selected participating restaurants (some 21 heavenly haunts) and I'll try to search for a picture for this campaign.
Back to this Pips thingy which most of you are bent on waiting.... I'm arranging for a suitable hotel for theBat$ to lodge at and near the Court houses.
As I am being away, when I get back home to Europe, I'll be back on this hotel arrangement, but the weather is simply melting me away, just too hot & humid while Thailand was just as chaotic too!!!
YB.

The first two times I had Durian I was not so crazy about it, but the last time my fruit guy in BKK gave me some, I really dug it.
Not a fruit that will ever catch on on the West though. The only one I can think of that you can use as a weapon. I never thought the smell was THAT bad.

I've wondered for some time just how bad a Durian really smells or what it can be compared to. I've heard you could go cat fishing with them they stink so bad, but from others that they're something great. One of these days, if I ever get around some, I'll give one a try. After all, back in the Army days of that other war, I ate things that would make a pig wince.

You meant "bak pao", Chinese milk-white looking steam breads filled either with pork or chicken or black bean sweat paste...whatever you may choose... but this is a a traditional form of appetiser that can be rather filling depending which time of the day one munches it. In fact, I had it last nite, flew in late from Bangkok, settled in and after a qikpeek on this forum, I left out with a group into a local eating spot called Macpherson Centre and had several local dishes...part of a late-late night supper just after midnite and had a piece of that pork-chop bun ...for the road...
It NEVER ever will.... but many who dares venture within close proximity to a vendor displaying and selling basketfull of this spiky fruit will soon discover the obnoxious smell is not really that becomes a bother once it works into your nostrils...it is the taste that is simply "holistic" that invigorates deep into your lusty crave which in turn releases all the antidotes that's left in your poisoned system to welcome this delicious tasty new devouring guest that apparently...smells like Mr Ed's urine...
Anyone remembers who is Mr Ed...the talking???
If you bought several of these and left it as it is, a fruit i.e., and decides to hop into a cab... the driver prefers you leave it in his boot while you will NOT want to walk up to the Reception Desk to ask for your room key as you will politely be reminded about the prohibition to take it into your hotel room...
It can be opened up and packed into a sealed 1-liter plastic size box for the road thus reducing the inextinguishable aroma (odor for others) as one set off to another location to enjoy in total trance & tranquil harmony like a glutton manifesting this delightful fruit in peace and serenity...ALONE or with like-minded insane Westerners venturing into this volatile extreme weapon....

My stomach is turning just from reading the "experience" of smelling and eating this "fruit?" I can only wonder what would happen if I actually ate it. Maybe if I put a clothes pin on my nose, nah, my stomach would still be turning over and over and over.... LOL!

Here’s a question for you guys, would you prefer durian or stinking tofu?
I have tried durian several times, I can’t say I am crazy about it, but it’s okay by me.
Few months ago, I heard from the news that a new generation of durian have been invented in Thailand, the stinking smell is replaced by the smell of banana in this new type of durian, they are hoping, by getting rid of the smell, it can make into the western markets, but it created some debates, as most people like durian actually like the smell of it, it is why it’s special.
At the moment, no one know for sure if it will be a success, but I think at least now you have an alternative, I guess at least it won’t be as such a flop as Pips...
Back to Pips, when I was convinced or was led to believed that Pips was real, I thought my luck had finally turned, little did I know that it would end up just another nightmare, as a member, of course I hope I am wrong, but can you count how many times that we were led to believe that a solution was just around the corner, only to be disappointed in the end? Some people still say Pips will be back, I would say, Yes, it will be back, but not to pay us what it owe us, or to help the poor around the world, it will be back to haunt us forever.
I would like to thank rolclub once again for keeping us informed during this waiting time.

The actual off white bits of fruit smell heavenly compared to some of the stinky cheeses in France and Germany, let me tell you. How about eating a cheese with live maggots?

I have had the Weasel **** coffee (as one of my aquaintances called it) in Viet Nam and it is very very good.
Enjoy your breakfast, lunch, dinner!Last edited by mrdome; 09-07-2007 at 09:53 AM.

You made my Friday, Yogi. I was laughing so hard at the pictures in my mind while reading your outlandishly funny description of that fruit, below, that I lost my coffee on my screen. Dude, your way of expression is the coolest. I don't know if I now would dare that fruit or not, but I'll always remember your description of it.
Cheers and a great weekend,
Thelema

You just made my day. Thank you.....My grandfather use to eat that nasty cheese. He was blind and made me laugh so much. He would chase the dame maggots around on his plate by feeling the edges. And being only 4 years old at the time it was funny. So sixty years later you got me laughing again about a small thing we tend to forget. Again, Thanks sooooooo much.
