Fact Sheet: UN Supports International Compact for Iraq - Security Council - Global Policy Forum
UN Supports International Compact for Iraq
In September 2006, broader consultations with the international community will take place in New York at the next meeting of the UN General Assembly, followed by an update to finance ministers at the annual World Bank/IMF meeting in Singapore. By taking into account estimates of how much financial support Iraq will need to rebuild its economy, the group hopes to develop a financing plan during the fall of 2006. The finalized Compact, including priorities, benchmarks, and commitments, will be presented by the Government of Iraq by the end of 2006.

McClatchy Washington Bureau | 09/18/2006 | The President of Iraq, Jalal Talabani, shares his views in 'Dear Americans'
The economic conditions for most Iraqis have improved. The economy was liberated from the control of the state and we are now taking the first steps in creating a vibrant private sector.
Thanks to our independent businesspeople, our market places are bustling despite the unsettled security situation.
A new investment law is before our Parliament. It will further invigorate our private sector, streamline the procedures for starting a new business, and open the country to greater foreign participation and investment.
Salaries of government employees were raised 100 times or more. A policeman under Saddam received $2 to $3 dollars a month. Now a policeman is paid at least $200 a month.
The financial and economic boom is mostly noticed in the safer parts of Iraq. The city of Sulaymaniyah in Iraqi Kurdistan region now has more than 2,000 millionaires. Before liberation, the city had 12.JULY STILL AINT NO LIE!!!

Guys, yesterday there was a mention from RR about the G7 recommending an increase for China and Iraq's values. Did anyone read or find this as this is big news and I'd like to read it in its entirety.
Zubaidi:Monetary value of the Iraqi dinar must revert to the previous level, or at least to acceptable levels as it is in the Iraqi neighboring states.
Shabibi:The bank wants as a means to affect the economic and monetary policy by making the dinar a valuable and powerful.

Kurdistan (The Kurdish Globe)
KRG complains that it has not received its share of the national budget.
The KRG complains that it has not received its share of the national budget, agreed at 17%. Iraq's income is overwhelmingly raised through oil revenues. In 2005, the amount allocated to the Kurdistan Region was almost $36,000 billion, with each barrel of Iraqi oil selling at $26.
The Kurdish Government states that the Iraqi government has not increased the region?s budget in line with its own policy to raise government employee salaries.
"In 2005, the Kurdish government paid four months" salaries to employees according to the increased rates decided upon by the Iraqi government. However, the central government failed to increase the region's budget in recognition of this, resulting in many wages, including those of university lecturers, doctors, judges and police, not being paid," Rashid Tahir, KRG's Deputy Finance Minister explains.
"This has continued, despite our numerous complaints to the Iraqi Finance Minister concerning the issue. We cannot increase salaries without a corresponding increase in the Kurdish budget."Zubaidi:Monetary value of the Iraqi dinar must revert to the previous level, or at least to acceptable levels as it is in the Iraqi neighboring states.
Shabibi:The bank wants as a means to affect the economic and monetary policy by making the dinar a valuable and powerful.
