January 13, 2005 - Russia's decision to write off Iraq's debt is guided, among other reasons, by the interests of Russian companies planning to help restore the Iraqi economy and put previously signed contracts into practice, sources in the Russian Security Council's executive office said.

The sources offered their comment during an Internet conference dealing with a new national security concept for Russia. The full version of their remarks is available on the Russian Security Council's website.

"Firstly, Russia agreed to take this step due to its solidarity with the friendly people of Iraq," they said.

"Secondly, in making this decision, Russia was governed by its long-term economic interests aimed at helping Russian companies take part in reviving the Iraqi economy and implementing our previous contracts with the Iraqi party," the sources said.

Russian Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin said in an earlier interview that Iraq's original debt to Russia stood at $10.5 billion. Writing off and restructuring this debt will reduce it to from $700 million to $1 billion, Kudrin said, adding that about 90% of Iraq's initial debt to Russia will be written off. It is planned to complete the write-off procedure by 2008.

Russian wide monetary base grows 0.06% in Sept
MOSCOW. Oct 17 (Interfax) - The wide monetary base in Russia grew 0.06% to 3.484 trillion rubles in September 2006 from 3.482 trillion rubles in August, the Central Bank reported on its website.

The monetary base grew 19.6% in January-September from 2.914 trillion rubles on January 1, 2006.
