    Maliki-Reconciliation
Premier Maliki says government determined to realize reconciliation
Baghdad, Apr 17, (VOI)- Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said that his government was resolved to realize three objectives, which top its agenda: activation of the national reconciliation, achieving peace and security and enacting important laws in cooperation with the parliament.
The premier expressed during his meeting with the visiting U.S. Secretary of Defence Robert Gates the possibility of achieving these strategic options this year, noting that "he is optimistic that Iraqis could abandon sectarianism and work only for the good of their country."
"The government had succeeded to isolate al-Qaeda armed group, which became an enemy for all Iraqis," al-Maliki affirmed.
"Terrorist attacks which rattled Baghdad recently would not deter the Iraqi government and people from combating armed groups," said Maliki's office in a statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
The prime minister reiterated that "Iraq's main problem was a political not a security one besides some other economic effects."
For his part, the visiting U.S. official reiterated his country's full support to the Iraqi government's efforts for activating the national reconciliation and achieving peace and security in the country.

Government should be the only party with weapons, says Sistani

    By Saadon al-Jaberi

    Azzaman, April 19, 2007

Grand Aytollah Ali Sistani has forbidden the killing of Muslims in Iraq and has urged the government to disarm all militia groups in the country.

Sistani, Iraq’s top Shiite cleric, made the call in a meeting which grouped both Muslim Shiite and Sunni clergy from the provinces of Baghdad, Basra, Diyala, Tikreet, Ramadi, Kirkuk and the Kurdish region.

The visit was to explore ways of ending the current sectarian strife in the country and methods to bring about national reconciliation.

“We have come to visit (Sistani) to back the project of national reconciliation … Sistani has forbidden the shedding of blood of all Muslims and reiterated the necessity of the state being the sole possessor of arms in Iraq,” said Sheikh Mohammed Talabani, a Sunni cleric and head of the delegation.

Ali Khafaji, another cleric in the delegation, said the visit was to demonstrate to the Iraqi people that both Shiite and Sunni clergy were against the shedding of Muslim blood.

“The visit was to spread the spirit of love among the sons of one nation and put an end to discord and confront those sowing it,” he said.

Yeah right! If I lived there I would be armed to the teeth everywhere I went!
Most people can't be trusted, so we should have laws against guns, which most people will abide by because they can be trusted.

GENEVA (Thomson Financial) - The World Trade Organisation has postponed the first meeting on Iraq's bid to join the body, which had been scheduled for tomorrow, trade sources said.

The move followed an official request from Iraq. No specific date has been set yet for the postponed meeting, the sources said.

Iraq applied to join the global trade club in Oct 2004. Its oil-dependent economy has been ravaged by decades of sanctions followed by spiralling violence and unemployment since the US-led invasion in 2003 to topple Saddam Hussein.

No reason was given for the postponement.

It's already hard being accepted in WTO due to all the requirments that needed to be met. I'm wondering why they have postponed the 1st meeting with WTO ? Does anyone know ?

This is actually a very interesting article. It was Sistani who stepped in on behalf of Sadr back in 2004, then the Iraqi gov't had a warrant for his arrest. This statement by Sistani makes a huge statement against the Mahdi Army, particularly now that Sadr's supporters/parliament members have distinctly withdrawn themselves from the government. It appears Sistani isn't so pleased with what Sadr has been doing with his free time since then.
