okay, Let's get down to business...

and both the ICI and a meeting for regional leaders to discuss security issues have been both pushed back to the first week of May.

A question: does anyone know if the RV needs to happen before the ICI or after, or does it matter?? Also the banker's meeting held recently in Amman Jordan saw discussions of "monetary policy in accordance with Article VIII"--has anyone seen anything on a future meeting to discuss WTO membership, and /or Article VIII? Remember, Article VIII is the WTO requirement for a "fully tradeable/convertable currency".

Iraq, UN set May 1st to hold Int'l Compact with Iraq By Muhammad al-Ghazzi BAGHDAD, April 6 (KUNA) -- Following initial talks with top Iraqi officials, in particular with vice president Adel Abdulmahdi, UN Secretary General's Special Adviser, Ibrahim Gambari, agreed Friday to set the date of May 1st to hold the International Compact with Iraq (ICI) meeting on long-term development for Iraq.
Among those Gambari met here were prime minister Nouri al-Maliki and his vice president for economic affairs Barham Saleh. The UN advisor expressed to all the Iraqi officials he held talks with UN's resolve to assist Iraq in enforcing security and stability in all corners of the country.
Moreover the UN would back up Iraq's efforts at national conciliation and would be ready to enter into a partnership with Iraq in order to help it get off the ground in all vital aspects, economic or otherwise.
Gamari reviewed with Abdulmahdi the conclusions arrived at in the previous meetings of the ICI and explained that the UN secretary general asked him to be here at this time to follow the course of those conclusions.
On the other hand Abdulmahdi apprised Gambari of the Iraqi government's achievement thus far in meeting the requirements set by the ICI to address such seminal issues as those affecting the nation's security, economy, and political stability.
Abdulmahdi indicated that in ICI's last meeting in New York which was attended by 112 states, it was agreed that a future meeting would be held for those who wished to be signitories on the UN-Iraq brokered compact for long-term economic development for Iraq.
While Ali al-Dabbagh, spokesman for the Iraqi government, officially affirmed today that the next ICI meeting would be held on May 1st, but did not reveal where the meeting would take place. However certain government sources surmised that Egypt would be the probable venue.
Furthermore, Barham Saleh stated after his meeting with Gambari that it would be announced next Sunday as to where the May meeting would take place.
The ICI May 1st meeting would enable Iraq to acquire international economic, finacial, and political support in exchange for implementing political, security, and economic reforms.
Abdulmahdi underscored that the meeting would focus wholly on the security, political, and economic aspects of life in Iraq under the current circumstances and with a view to ameliorate those aspects in concrete terms.
He expected that in the May meeting no less than 100 countries will be signitories to the compact to help Iraq get on its feet. (end) mhg.ajs KUNA 062153 Apr 07NNNN
