    Unhappy

    Iraq plunging into the abyss

Iraq is heading towards the abyss. The path to hell gets clearer not only day after day but hour after hour. The abyss engulfs the country the way rough seas erode a small island.

And Iraqi politicians whose ultimate aim is to keep their power and influence live in a different country. It is Iraq but Iraq only by name.

No Iraqi politician ever asks whether he is fit for the job or the responsibility he is given to shoulder. In fact Iraq in the midst of the abyss and not on its way to it as some observers and analysts think. It is very possible for the ball of fire of which the abyss is composed to devour everything at any time.

In theory, there is a country with geographical borders called Iraq. Inside, there is no country since it has lost the ability to stabilize and establish good relations with its regional or Arabic environment.

If it were not for oil, Iraq would be in the eyes of many states an unknown forest where a bloody struggle takes place over weak preys.

The massive bombings which take place in Baghdad and other cities every two or three months are signals of a country lacking a clear economic, security and development vision since its occupation in 2003.

The successive governments have failed to draw up a development program to reconstruct the country, produce enough electricity and provide basic amenities like childcare and public health. Iraq is gradually turning into a political forest for rival parties. The rights of citizens have no place in this forest.

The efforts to implode and destroy the country and its infrastructure continue. For this reason I see darker clouds ahead in the coming months.

Whatever happens in the coming months, the blame will squarely fall on Iraqi politicians. They are the ones to be held accountable for the destruction of the country, whether they have been doing this willingly, unwillingly, under duress, due to naivety, ignorance or being agents of another power.
