CAIRO, Sept 27 (KUNA) -- Iraq needs the dedication of its people and Arab support to prevent it from division, said Iraqi National Assembly Speaker Dr. Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani on Wednesday.

In a telephone statement to "Voice of Arabia" radio, he said such a division could lead to a greater partition of the whole region, describing the situation as "a historic crisis." Moreover, he warned against instigating sectarianism "in implementation of a foreign agenda for a sectarian-based federalism." Al-Mashhadani said the proposed form of federalism was rejected by all Iraqis, adding that what was currently taking place in Iraq was the result of "occupation and the weak performance of some sects, and the suspicious movements of others that is instigating sectarianism." Iraq's political blocs had agreed on Sunday to postpone for 18 months the implementation of federalism once it was approved by the parliament.

The Iraqi government and a number of Arab countries are seeking to achieve reconciliation between Iraqis and to resume national dialogue rounds in the interest of the country. (end) rg.
