If everyone looked after those in their backyard, the world would be covered.
That's the way I see it too. If everyone focused the need around them the needy would be covered. The large organizations often have a political agenda that they can push due to the clout that comes from the money they received. United Way stopped giving money to the Boy Scouts because they won't let homosexuals be Scout Leaders. Desert Wolf hasn't even started his "charity" yet and look at his agenda:

It's gone from "pooling resources to help the most people" to attacking left wing liberals. Not that I'm against attacking left wing liberals I just don't want agendas involved with money I'm giving.

Here are links to organizations that rate charities using a variety of criteria. Most importantly though is how much is being used to raise more money versus how much goes to helping those in need.

Here is my plan: I will fund the Interactive Metronome to underprivileged children in our local schools. I am a nurse but also can administer this therapy. It is designed for children with ADD/ADHD or those who have difficulty with math and reading skills. The children receiving it now are those whose partents can afford it...unfortunately, the ones needing it the most are the children whose parents CANNOT afford it. I firmly believe that good math and reading skills can change the entire future of children who might otherwise fail in school, and thus in life. This is my dream and I can hardly wait to see the success on those little faces!

    Default ooo schools too!!

I have family members that are teachers in low income schools. I'm sure I could give them some cool stuff to learn English at least. Most of the student are aspiring farm pickers at the moment and all want to drop out in 6th grade to start making "the big bucks". Not trying to be mean, I have heard those words out of more than one of the kids mouths over the years, in Spanish.

    Interesting,

Nice to read a thread where people are willing to help others and share ideas on how they plan to do it. We all can make a huge impact on the less fortunate, and I cannot think of anything more worthy than what is being discussed, helping out veteran families and especially children. There will be enough for us to donate to any cause we wish, so lets not make an argument over which is the best methodo to donate, just donate is the real point of this thread.

Good luck and health to all, Mike

I dumped the United Way when it was proven that the CEO was getting paid a huge salary and was abusing funds for his personal perks like limos etc...I also disapproved of cutting off the Boy Scouts for not allowing queers to be leaders.

I haven't liked the United Way since my mother told me why she didn't like them - her friend worked there and she said his salary was way out of line for the job he was doing. I didn't know about the Boy Scout thing. On that score, I would say they must please the majority of their regular supporters. I wonder if they bothered to find out what people wanted?

Anyway, when I tell people what my mother said, they act like I'm nuts. They say that only 5 cents on the dollar goes to admin and that's audited and true. They think it's great. What they don't get is that that's a huge sum of money and it's really not a huge organization and they don't do much. I mean, they raise funds and distribute them. That's it. Most of their workers are volunteers. I'll be they get most of their promotion and stuff for free...

Me, I'd rather just give to the local food bank, the Salvation Army, and a couple of others that I know are spending the money effectively. Of course, I most look forward to helping friends and family!

I remember that! He was earning over $300,00.00 a year and being chauffeured in a limo. The arrogance .

How about that whole mess with the Red Cross saying they were collecting money to benefit the families of 911 victims. They didn't give out any of the millions they received. Bill O'Reilly got on them over that until they finally distributed the contributions as they said they would.

There have been several occassions where I had to go into a Blind and Deaf School. It is an old decrepit school house where the smell of mold hits you the first step inside the door. My heart just went out to these children! Especially in light of the fact when you loose one of your senses it increases other senses such as the sense of smell. The mold in that school is overwhelming to me, can you imagine how it would be for them? I hope that the dinar r/v's high enough that I can do something for these children. Whether it be a total remodeling of the building, but better yet a brand new building for them. Hopefully somehow I can make a difference for these precious children.

    Cheers!

I remember that Red Cross fiasco. They decided to take 400 million dollars of the donations to save for the NEXT time a calamity hits, what a joke!! I heard that is their standard policy with big donations...makes you wonder. I can kind of understand it as far as managing for catastrophes in the future, but when I gave to the Red Cross for 911, I wanted it to go to the victims and the emergency services, not some savings account!!
