Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and Kurdistan's President, Massoud Barzani, review the situation in the region and Kurdistan’s relationship with its neighbors Kurdistan TV

KTV. At a press conference given by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and Kurdistan President, Massoud Barzani, Saturday, the Iraqi president said they had discussed Kurdistan’s current problems as well as relations between their two parties, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

The Kurdistan president claimed the talks had been a success, saying they planned to meet again in the next few days in order to come to an agreement on various issues under discussion. Talabani added they intend to back the Baghdad security plan, which they believe offers a glimmer of hope to the people of the city. Referring to the Iraqi government’s support in the reconstruction of Halabja, Kurdistan’s president pointed out that “the extensive reconstruction taking place in Kurdistan is being funded by the Kurdistan Regional Government”. Zalmay Kjhalizad, America’s Ambassador to Iraq, also attended the meeting.

Barzani acknowledged the importance of the Americans’ presence at all meetings, as a member of the coalition forces. He stressed that cooperation and good relations with the Americans are a crucial factor if they are to overcome the problem of fuel shortages.

Underlining the importance of relations between Iran and Iraq, Talabani stated that ”having been relatively successful in strengthening relations with all our neighbors, this could pave the way for a visit to Iran by the Iraqi Prime Minister in the near future”. He added that there have been attempts to improve relations with Turkey.

Commenting on the talk on the street, which includes claims that the PUK and PDK are cooperating with and providing support to the PKK, Talabani stated that “Kurdistan’s two major parties have never been involved in any PKK confrontations with Turkey, but we have often come to the assistance of Turkey in clashes with the PKK. Like Turkey, we have come to the conclusion that military force is not the answer and have even tried to persuade the PKK to reach a deal with Turkey.

On the issue of new Iraqi oil law, Barzani said some problems remained unresolved but that Talabani had exchanged views with Iraqi Prime Minister in a telephone conversation today. Finally, the Kurdistan President rejected claims that Kurdistan has invited American forces to use Kurdistan as a base for its operations, adding that no such demands have been made by the Americans.
