Dollar demand went sharply up in Iraq’s central bank daily auction on Monday to $104,040 million from $50,755 million on Sunday.The bank said in its daily statement it covered all bids which were $18.560 million in cash and $85.680 million in foreign transfers at an exchange rate of 1,298 dinars per dollar, two ticks lower than Sunday’s rate.

Sixteen banks, the highest over two months, participated in Monday's auction and offered to sell $3,540 million which the central bank bought all at 1,296 dinars per dollar rate.

Ali al-Yasseri, a trader, said "the surge in the bids for dollars was expected after the Iraqi Central Bank's policy in the auction had become obvious for traders."

"The bank now offers hard currency at either stable exchange rates or at rates of only two ticks lower than the previous session," al-Yasseri added.

The Iraqi trader expected a somehow stable bids for dollars above the $ 100 million ceiling during next Central Bank's auction sessions.

"It is a new phase in the auction but it means more commitment on part of the Iraqi Central Bank towards traders," al-Yasseri said.

Iraq oil law would distribute revenues
high level Iraq government committee has hammered out a proposed law that would give the federal government authority over distribution of oil revenues, The New York Times reported Saturday.

In the story reported out of Baghdad, Iraqi Planning Minister Ali Baban, a member of the Sunni-dominated Tawafaq party, was quoted as saying that the proposed draft law would ‘give us the basis of unity in this country.’

Equal distribution of oil revenues has been a key issue in escalating sectarian violence in Iraq, where the oil-rich regions are dominated by the majority Shia population or Kurds in the north.

While those two groups insist they should control the revenues, the minority Sunnis, who lost power when the late president Saddam Hussein was ousted, charge they are being cut out of benefiting from the nation’s resources.

The draft law will go before the cabinet ‘early next week,’ quoting Oil Ministry spokesman Asim Jihad.

The draft would call for the Iraqi prime minister to oversee contracts and review contracts already signed under Hussein or by the Kurdish government, Jihad said.

The United States has been demanding that the Iraqi government take control of the country’s oil reserves to help cool down sectarian bitterness.

60 million, 103 million, 55 million, the amounts are just amazing on a daily basis. Not too long ago the CBI was pulling an average of 7 to 10 million per day. Since the return of the auctions after their year end break we have seen nearly 3/4's of a trillion dinars pulled from circulation and there seems to be no end to it. Someone posted a couple days ago that if the reval is more than 1:1 then all the dollars that are in the Iraqi economy would need to be exchanged for dinars, since the dinar would be worth more than a dollar. It finally made sense to me! The CBI doesn't need to have boatloads of foreign currency (ie: dollars) in their reserves to uphold their reval, they need dinars to exchange for dollars that are being circulated in their economy. Michael 16 said that was logical only if the dinar was an internationally traded currency. So if they reval at more than 1:1 and they put the dinar on the forex so that dinars are legal tender for goods and services coming into the country, (right now they can only pay for those items with dollars) then this all makes sense with what the CBI has been doing since they started this very overt plan to increase the value of the dinar. The guys at the CBI are really smart cookies. It gives me confidence that we'll all see a very nice return on our investment. When, I can no londer logically figure out, but time is on our side and it will happen. So with that here are todays numbers.



1. A 3 point change in the dinar today. Was 1298, now 1295

4. 67th auction since the beginning of CBI's reval plan

5. 115 days into the CBI's reval plan.

6. 3,795,212,130,000 dinars pulled from circulation !!

7. 0 Dinars back into circulation today !!

8. 182 dinar change since Oct 1st (baseline was 1477) 12.322% increase in value of the dinar since beginning of reval plan (Approximatly Oct 1st).

9. 5 point reduction in the rate so far this week. Was at 1300 at the end of last week, 1295 this week.

10. 30 point drop so far in the month of Jan. Ended at 1325 in Dec, now stands at 1295

Dollar demand down in Iraqi Cenbank auction
Baghdad, Jan 23, (VOI) – Dollar demand declined on Tuesday in Iraq’s central bank daily auction, reaching $60.605 million compared to $104.240 million on Monday.
In its daily statement the bank said it covered all bids which were $13.105 million in cash and $47.500 million in foreign transfers at an exchange rate of 1,295 dinars per dollar, three ticks lower than Monday’s rate.
None of the 14 banks that participated in Tuesday’s auction offered to sell dollars.
Economist Abdul-Razzaq Sadeq al-Abaiji told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) the new decline in rates heralded a new retreat in auction activity.
Abaiji expected a big rise in the monthly sales of the central bank during the coming months after approving the Iraqi federal budget in dinars. He said this would make the government buy dinars from the central bank and sell dollars in the daily auction, thus propelling sales to record levels.
