Landstar System 1st-qtr profit sinks, misses views, on sinking demand and lower prices. Company earned $13.9 mln, or 27 cents per share, compared with net income of $23.7 mln, or 45 cents per share, a year earlier.

Trading activity was to the green side of the markets but, nothing real exciting. Slow motion trading activity plagued the markets throughout the session today. Not much activity during the afternoon. Major U.S. indices ended the trading session to the upside, at the closing bell.

Cytec announced a net loss for the Q1 2009 of $0.1 mln or $0.00 per share on net sales of $612 mln compared to net earnings for the Q1 2008 of $49.1 mln or $1.01 per diluted share on net sales of $973 mln.

Biogen Idec said its Q1 earnings rose but, overall revenue and sales of its main ***** fell short of market expectations.

(ELY) - short
Callaway Golf announced net sales estimated to be $272 mln, a decrease of 26% compared to net sales of $366 mln for the Q1 2008. Gross profit estimated to be $116 mln or 43% of net sales compared to gross profit of $176 mln or 48% of net sales for the Q1 2008.

(ISRG) - short
Intuitive Surgical reported Q1 results that met analyst estimates but, company reported net income of $28.1 mln or 72 cents per share, down from $44.8 mln or $1.12 per share, a year earlier. Adjusted EPS at $1.02 with sales virtually flat.

(CHK) - short
Chesapeake Energy announced it has elected to curtail approximately 400 mln cubic feet (mmcf) per day of its gross natural gas production due to continued low wellhead prices.

The DOW posted yet another closing positive week, for its 6th, in a row. Quiet afternoon trading activity followed up the whip-o-tile trading action seen during the morning trading session. The weekend brings a well looked forward to respite for traders. Earnings season brings on some heavy hitters next week that may create some market moving action.

BreitBurn Energy announced having investigated a number of potential sources of capital, none were available on terms acceptable. It is temporarily suspending distributions to remain in compliance with certain provisions of its credit facility and to redirect cash flow.

MBF Healthcare Acquisition announced that its Board of Directors voted to approve the Company's proposed plan of liquidation as of the close of business on April 22, 2009 and the Company’s share transfer books will close and trading will be suspended.

(WFSL) - short
Washington Federal announced earnings of $8,410,000 or $.10 per diluted share for the 3Q 2009, compared to $35,452,000 or $.40 per diluted share for the same period one year ago; earnings decreased by $27,042,000 or 76%.

Texas Instruments reported 1Q net income of $17 mln or 1 cent a share, compared with a profit of $662 mln or 49 cents a share, for previous year. Revenue was $2.1 bln, down from $3.3 bln last year.

(CNI) - buy
Canadian National Railway 1Q profit rose 36% after it sold a rail corridor; earned 424 mln Canadian dollars ($349.6 mln) or 90 Canadian cents (74 cents) per share during the quarter that ended March 31.

(PKG) - buy
Packaging Corporation reported first quarter 2009 net income of $26 mln or $0.25 per share compared to 1Q 2008 net income of $32 mln or $0.31 per share; net sales for the 1Q were $512 mln compared to $577 mln in 1Q of 2008.

(ZION) - short
Zions said its net loss in 1Q was $832.2 mln or $7.29 a share, compared with a profit of $104.3 mln or 97 cents a share, in the year-earlier quarter.

The market held in a tight trading range today, to the positive side but, very snug. Trading activity was very odd today consisting of a combo of whip-o-tile trading action to trading action that appeared to not even exist. Traders struggled to make a buck today and were anxious for the closing bell, to put the session to rest.

Capital One posted a net loss from continuing operations of $86.9M or 39 cents vs. $6.32.6M or $1.70 a share in 1Q last year.

Altera 1Q net earnings were $44M or 15 cents a share compared with $83.9M or 27 cents a share in the year-ago period.

(NSC) - short
Norfolk Southern 1Q earnings fell 39%. They earned $177M or 47 cents per share, compared with $291M or 76 cents per share a year earlier.
