Mediation is certainly helpful in increasing mind power. There are some other ways in which you can transform your thinking process and influence the mind, which results in better control. Applied quantum theory can also be taken in account when talking about self development. According to that school of thought we experience we think, reflect on, believe in, etc. in every minute detail.

t is a very good idea to write down the tasks you need to achieve in each day. As you complete them, tick them off. You should not, however, feel like you are bound to your list. If you don’t manage to do everything, it doesn’t matter – move any incomplete tasks from today on to tomorrow’s list. This is also a great help if you are a procrastinator.

Self-help, or self-improvement, is a self-guided improvement—economically, intellectually, or emotionally—often with a substantial psychological basis. Many different self-help groupings exist and each has its own focus

Seriously, read Napoleon Hill - The Law of Success in 16 lessons. The original version which consists of ca 1100 pages.

It is from that book which 99% of all popular self-development nowadays stem from. You will not regret reading it.
