Actually, if one is a Christian, God dictated the 10%, so in effect that person would be doing exactly what was required by God. Many have trouble even contributing 10%, so why is it that not enough? Especially when God only has asked for that little? At least God doesn't try to bankrupt people, unlike the governments of the world....

With regard to pursuing a life dedicated to helping people, why does it take money, and I doesn't take being religious as helping them. Many of the best things that people can do only involve their time and effort (i.e. physical effort), which is much more of a commitment than your easily donated dollars.

Anyhow, I'd rather be close to God than religious. No need to impress the world with religiousity, eh.

I'm not "religious." I have no church affiliation. I don't need that to be walking with the Lord. And acutally, the 10% tithe - that is old testament. I don't know if it is even "required" anymore, there is nothing in the new testament about tithing. However, I have picked two places for where my money will go. The humane society here in my town is getting a huge chunk and the Cherokee children and elders are getting a chunk. Yes I am Cherokee. Yes I am a Christian. No, I am not trying to "buy my way into heaven" and no, I'm not just a little bit Christian. If I offened some of you (I know I didn't offend others!) I apologize. But this is me, this is what I believe. And, I can't quote scripture and don't know exactly where this is in the Bible but "It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get to heaven." You can't buy your way into heaven!
