We agree DDD. Don't even get me started on second hand smoke. I know it is every person's right to choose if they smoke or not, but I feel mighty ashamed when I think back to the times my son was strapped in the back seat of my smoke filled car. He had no choice.

But to the thing with our government; This is one of the things that sticks in my craw, and I just can't swallow it. There are two kinds of laws: Those that protect others from us, and those that protect us from ourselves. And there has been plenty of laws passed to protect ourselves from ourselves.
What I can't get past is by allowing it (in other words, condoning (sp?) it)
it just negates the whole psychology of the direction our government trys to convince us it is headed. IT MAKES ME MAD that they allow it to continue KNOWING it is a proven killer. I can't imagine how some must feel that have lost a loved one on account of double-faced back-stabbing politicians and the tobacco companies. I could go on and on cause its not right. But this soap box is only so big, and I like to pace while I rant.[/quote]
DDDD,
Excuse me, but I had to interject. The fact that cigarettes kill is real, but if you look at statistics you'll find out that booze costs us far more in lives of drinkers and none drinkers, lost work time, illness, ruined lives and relationships. So once the govern. finishes telling us we can't smoke, and we can't eat fast foods, they WILL go after drinkers next. I think people should have the right to choose for themselves whether they want to smoke, drink and eat fast food. If they drink and drive then the government can get involved otherwise they should stay out of our lives. I quit drinking 20 years ago and don't regret it, but I still smoke and am tired of the gov. passing laws telling me I can't. JMHO

I agree that the government should not be able to tell us whether we can smoke or not. I think my point was not made clear enough. It is not the act of smoking that the government should put a stop to, it is the lethal chemicals that the tobacco companies are allowed to add to the tobacco to keep smokers addicted. There should be more stringent regulations.
My Mom and I were talking about half hour ago about this very subject and she said 30 years or so ago she could make a pack last her a week cause she could take 'em or leave 'em, but she can definitely tell that over time more and more chemicals have been added.
But I do agree with no smoking in restaurants and some public places. Since I quit, it seems that I have become very allergic to the smoke, to the point of becoming very ill. And it is not pleasant trying to eat in a cloud of smoke.
I sure did not mean to turn this thread into a debate over smoking and I am not judging anyone for smoking. As I have said before, I have other bad habits that need to go and I would need to pull the fence post out of my eye before removing the splinter from my neighbor's eye.

I agree with you answer.
We all have our habits. There is something that has changed with cigs. My parents smoked and it did not stink up the house the way they do today. I think the addiction is worse than in the old days. But I don't want the government legislating morality. We should teach it in the home. Including trying to be respectful for others who don't wish to smell our smoke.

I don't smoke or drink. My dad did both. I agree that it is a person's right to choose what they want. It may sound silly but the one thing that bothers me the most has to do with tv. Several years ago when they took the cigarette commercials off, but not the alcohol ones. How many time have you seen someone have a few to many smokes and then get in a car only to drive off and wind up killing an innocent family?

I agree with you both. Personal responsibility and moderation are key! It is puzzling how the alcohol adds have not only been allowed to remain, but have become prevelant. Things that make you go hmmmmm?

i do what i want to do...
If I want to drink a 1/5 of everclear in one night, own another side arm, not wear my seat belt, smoke a cigar, slap my kid acting up in public, walk on the grass, or **** on the side walk I think i damn deserve to. I joined the military, went to Iraq, paid my taxes, and paid my dues. I don't care what laws the government makes saying i can't do this or that, I'm just going to do what I want anyways. I have common sense, i can tell the difference between right and wrong. I don't need someone else to make those decisions for me. If they do, however, they are just going to get pissed when I don't do it anyways. F**k that...
