Beginning in late 2003, the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA), with assistance from USAID and the U.S. Department of Treasury, conducted a four-month program to exchange Iraqi’s old currency for a new currency - including the facilitation and management of putting 4.62 trillion new dinars into circulation, while also destroying the old currency.

I don't understand this. Why is he "starting trouble"? All he's doing is debating trying to find answers. His argument is solid, IMO.

There are only two economic reasons I can think of for this:

    1. Iraq will NEVER be able to repay the debt

    2. They have gotten something of value in exchange.

As far as 1. goes, we all know Iraq is gonna be an extremely wealthy country
because of it's oil, so why cancel when you can just defer.

    Brings us to 2.

What can Iraq give these countries now to appease them, that one day will
    have great value.....of course IQD.

With some rules set to control how much these countries can use towards oil
purchase at any time it will be like giving these countries a massive discount
on their oil for years to come.

    Everyone's happy.

When all this excess currency returns to Iraq through oil purchase, the
government can remove it from circulation without it having any significant
    effect on the local ecconomy.

As if this extra currency had never really existed.

As I say, just a thought, but it would explain why there is more currency
than actually warranted ( if indeed that is so ), as it will never be in real
    circulation.

Does that make any sense ?

Besides the oil, this is pretty much the basis for making this a good gamble.

This is the first time he has called (been there for over two years) his wife with this kind of information. I talked with her last Sunday and have been checking everywhere I can for info-and asking others on these boards (with more sources than me) for confirmation. I emailed her last night-she also has been trying to confirm. I am posting our emails back and forth last night:

He has a new computer, but he can't access the internet. The military has put a block on all wireless access. Naturally, they do that after we buy a computer for him to take back with him this last time. I just have to wait for him to call me. Hopefully he will call tomarrow!! The info he got came from one of the guys that had just come off a convoy from Baghdad. He said that every one in Baghdad was twitterpated and now it has spread all the way to his camp. His friend said that he tried to get them to tell him how he knew that the Dinar was about to come out and they said "We can't tell you, but just trust us, we have inside info." Now what ever that means. And since David is on light duty and can't drive right now, he won't be going to Baghdad any time soon as far as I know. I really wish I knew what they were talking about TOO! I have been watching this stuff around the clock since a week ago this past Thursday night. I haven't seen anything else either. I've seen the tiny flux in the dinar too but that's about it. I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything I promise, and you do the same okay. Crystal

Did he elaborate on why they are thinking that it's going to revalue? I've been watching it closely this week (more so than usual) and still haven't seen any kind of movement other than an up and down between 1475 dinars to the dollar down to 1466 to the dollar and back up again. Also, have been looking through any source I can find on the net and nothing. They have to have heard something that has them worked up. It had to come from somewhere. If it's just a rumor-such as we get here-almost monthly-then it's a believe it when I see it. If it's valid information, sure wish we could find out where it came from.

Can you, perhaps, email him and obtain a little more information?
    Thanks
    Toni

I haven't heard from David the last couple days. But when he called on Tuesday he said that everyone was still twitterpated over there. And he is still hearing $1.68 to the Dinar. I can't imagine that, but that's what he is hearing. He said for me to just keep a good eye on things for now, just in case it isn't just a rumor!! I've had my TV on the stock channel for the last week and I had my neighbor set my computer to alert me when there is a change in the Currency. It's crazy! If I hear anymore I'll yell at cha. I did find out that Wells Fargo will be trading and when it does go on the world market all I have to do is take it to any branch and they will take care of it for me. I think they said that there will be a one time $5.00 fee. I told my mother to go to Amarillo tomarrow and open up an account with Wells Fargo so that's what she is doing. I already have an account with them. We don't have the bank you were talking about down south. Talk to ya later, Crystal

As I stated before, not going to hold my breath - just hopeful. What I can't believe is if it does revalue, it would be $1.68 to the dollar. They started buying their dinars mid 2004 and this is the first time he has ever told his wife anything like this before. You may be right-the service men may be picking up rumors - like us - from the internet. Normally, I simply post news items I see that I believe would be of interest. Since this is the first time this has happened, I wanted to post it and see if anyone could find any validity to David's call

my friend who has been talking to his brother via phone from iraq talked with him the other night and confirmed the 'buzz' about the dinar talk and that everyone was talking about 'three days' (found article next day in al sabaah called 'three days') and that the dinar was revaluing. said all communication was shut down at the bases until further notice. said he would call when he got to baghdad the next day but bro never got the call.

No way....are you serious??? I am flattered but...he is a few thousand miles off...I live in Central Pennsylvania....heck we are not even in the same time zone...SGS has contacts and she is in the know. I only have hunches and I am married to a U.S. Army 1st Sgt who just got back from Iraq last November after a 14 month tour of duty and 23 years service, hopefully I can keep him retired... I follow SGS like everybody else but as far as in the know....geez....Let's put it this way....if I was to disappear today it would take my husband and 2 kids 3 days to realize I was gone....and that is only because the laundry would be piling up...and groceries were running low. I just got lucky with this venture and it wasn't even my husband who mentioned the dinar investment...He had brought home old saddam dinars for souveniers for our daughters and I was looking on the internet for some history about them and stumbled across the new dinars...I guess it was fate...believe me I am usually a day late and a dollar short and this was just a fluke!!! What a ride though... Come on an reval I am ready to get off this rollercoaster!!!
