Consider this investment option a win-win opportunity: as there are (always) people who prefer to invest a larger sum (and recover it with return after deduction of a relevant % as a donation) rather than donating 1$ or a small sum (without return). In other words, this is not about 'wanting' a return... but about the existence of a limit beyond which one isn't prepared anymore to give... but still prepared to loan.
From that perspective, the investment option brings more money in, even with providing return. Of course in a perfect world this could be done too without return... but (given a response of < 0,01% and the fact that afaik besides investing (t)he(y) donated too) I think those investors do already much more than the above average pipster does... So imho this thinking is perfectly understandable .
(btw... the investor was a donator too... )

Instinct... intuition... yes... of course... yet another talent you develop by (learning to) trust people :-).

I've learned the hard way to not trust those who are not trusting individuals...

It seems those who trust, trust because they can be trusted and vice versa...
