Iraqi elites: The Rise of Allawi, a blow to the religious currents

With the convergence of the preliminary results of the Iraqi legislative elections that took place on the seventh of March, a coalition between the state of law, led by Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, the Iraqi List led by Iyad Allawi, Iraqi academics felt that the rise of the secular Allawi's list is a blow to religious-political currents.

Dr. Hamid Fadhil professor of political science at Baghdad University, "has become the political scene today is complex and I think that Allawi is a hard number, and probably will be decided outside voices rise and superiority to the list of al-Maliki." He added that "the scene is currently open to all possibilities, and future alliances will probably Allawi to be president of the Iraqi government.

He believed that Allawi, who does not want an alliance with a list of al-Maliki is making contacts with other parties, which converge in the views with him on a variety of situations and issues, while al-Maliki's chances seem slim win over the other powers for his adherence to the option of a majority government is difficult and will probably stay Maliki alone".

He stated that "Maliki's opponents, notably Allawi became strong alone or Pthafahm, and I think that Maliki will be the next head of government, and hope that Allawi is a strong candidate for the position will be a great moment and will continue long in power because he will reap the fruits of the Maliki government." He also expected that "Allawi is heading to the stage of construction, reconstruction and will get people's confidence, and will be from the standpoint of saving people."

Dr. Hafez professor of political science at Baghdad University, "The great success of Allawi's Iraqi street opposite discontent about the programs put forward by political parties and religious blocs, and that this success was the form of blow and a big drop at the level of popular support for religious currents, and thus rise of Allawi, demonstrated a desire change in the Iraqi street, and the search for a new alternative for the management of the country."

He pointed out that "This is what body positions in the winning Shiite cities in central and southern Iraq, with al-Maliki did not achieve any progress in the western and northern regions." "We have won Allawi is a very large, unexpected and I think that the battle will be resolved in favor of forming the new government, especially as other religious groups insist on the exclusion list, therefore, al-Maliki, Allawi, a hot candidate for the next government."

"Hafiz," al-Maliki is not good to insist on a majority government, it may be a form of fiction in unstable situations, Iraq was still politically fragmented country, and I think that the Government of political participation is the most appropriate solution."

"I think that a strong alliance may be reached between Allawi and the Iraqi National Coalition to highlight as a great addition to the Kurdistan Alliance in the next parliament, to lead the next cabinet and Allawi post of parliament speaker goes to the National Coalition, and remain as president of the Kurds."

The Iraqi Accordance Front, the Iraqi Islamic Party, led by the most prominent losers in the election, winning 6 seats after that was to have 44 seats in the 2005 elections.

Also absent from the new Iraqi parliament from many parties and political entities, most notably the Iraqi Communist Party and the Iraqi Nation Party, led by Mithal Alusi, and important figures, including Adnan Pachachi, Mowaffaq al-Rubaie and others, for not having enough votes to ensure a seat in the new parliament.

Dr. Kazim said المقدادي Professor of Journalism Faculty of Information, "I think that the voices of Iraqis living abroad will be resolved is the rapprochement between the large-Maliki, Allawi, especially the voices of Iraqis in Amman and Damascus, both of which have the largest contingent of overseas pro-Allawi, and it seems that we will be waiting to the last moment to resolve the rapprochement between the two teams".

"It is difficult today to talk about a majority government and, therefore, that option is political suicide, and logic says that partnership to form a government of national Iraqi government needs to form several coalitions can not be any entity to form a government alone."

The المقدادي that "the most salient results of the elections the desire to continue to erode the religious and political currents, which began its features since the provincial election last year, and the rise of the al-Maliki was not because he belonged to the Dawa party, but because people found it may be led by a moderate country, but the situation changed now receded religious currents in a clear and forward currents of secularism."

Iraq stops importing fuel for first time since 2003

For first since the 2003-U.S. invasion Iraq produces enough fuel to meet all its domestic needs, the Oil Ministry said in a statement.

“We have reached the state of self-sufficiency in fuel products such as gasoline, kerosene and liquefied gas,” the statement said.

It said no fuel products were imported in the past three months.

The announcement is good news as the country use to reel under acute fuel shortages.

Fuel imports cost the ministry hundreds of millions of dollars. The statement did not say what the ministry intends to do with the savings.

It is yet to be seen whether the ministry will meet demand during the peak summer season.

The statement did not make promises of no more imports. It said the ministry might resort to fuel imports if necessary.
