US praises Maliki's speech, Britain renews support

President Jalal Talabani stressed that ruling direction now moves toward reconciliation, accordance and forming a side includes all faithful powers of progress.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Noori Maliki renewed his confirmations to make cabinet reshuffle faces mass welcoming, two Presidents assumed to make a success at national reconciliation project after their meeting with British PM Tony Blair who visited Baghdad suddenly then he left to Basra, a statement of information office of PM said. It added that Maliki would send envoys and invite to hold regional conference supports political process and develop Baghdad security's plan.

Syria and Iraq sign security accord

Syria and Iraq on Monday signed an agreement on boosting security co-operation, less than a month after a renewal of diplomatic relations, the state news agency Sana reported.

The memorandum of understanding was signed by Jawad al-Bolani, the visiting Iraqi interior minister, and General Bassam Abdul Majid, his Syrian counterpart.

It calls for closer co-operation in a bid to strengthen security on the border between Syria and Iraq, to step up measures against terrorism and ease the extradition of suspects, Sana said.

Bolani travelled to Syria from Amman, where he signed a similar pact with Jordan.

On November 21, Iraq and Syria announced the restoration of diplomatic ties, 26 years after Saddam Hussein, the then Iraqi president, severed relations in protest at Syria's support for Iran in its war against Iraq.

The move came at the end of a visit to Baghdad by Walid Moallem, the Syrian foreign minister, the first by a foreign minister from Damascus since the 2003 overthrow of Saddam in a US-led invasion.

Recommendations

In other news, Naseer al-Ani of the Sunni Iraqi Islamic Party and spokesperson for Iraq’s reconciliation conference said the meeting has come up with more than 30 recommendations, among them were the formation of some committees.

These recommendations will be semi-abiding if they were to be implemented, as he put it. The constitutional committee recommended reviewing the constitution, particularly the articles on federalism and banning of "Saddamist Baath" and its members from employment.

The army committee recommended that the formation an Iraqi army should be based on patriotic and professional bases, making use of the former Iraqi army and calling for compulsory military service.

The constitution power committee proposed setting a timetable for foreign forces' pullout from Iraq and urgently handing over security duties to Iraqis.

It suggested asking the Iraqi parliament to pass a law nullifying the so-called Bremer laws - laws passed on the watch L Paul Bremer, the US pro-consul in Iraq just after the invasion - that contradict the national interest.

Iraq to increase strategic stockpile of food

According to an official at the Iraqi government, the Ministry of Commerce is planning to increase the strategic stockpile of food to meet emergency situations.

The official said that the Ministry of Commerce constructed a multi-purpose operation room, associated to the minister's office, and will be responsible for the storage and distribution of the ration card materials.

The Ministry formed several committees to study the increase of the emergency food balance and to know the future needs of the country's population.

The aim of this study is to determine the current strategic reserve in addition to the emergency stockpile, which helps in emergencies and natural disasters.

The amount placed back into the economy was an insignificant amount. This in no way establishes a change in the trend. Banks still need cash for day-to-day transactions and todays amount is nothing to worry about. If my math is correct, then the net effect this week is still very large. Another factor that I havent seen taken into account is the replacement of worn out bills. I have read that here in the U.S. we replace about 30 billion worth of worn out bills per year. Our one dollar bill has a life span of between 18 and 22 months before taken out of circulation and destroyed. The higher the denomination the longer the life span. I also havent seen any evidence that the Iraqi's have printed more currency since the initial run of NID. If they havent, they have probably been replacing old bills with reserves at the CBI. One of the orders of dinar I received nearly two years ago were well worn at that time so I'm confident that they have had to replace and destroy a fair amount of dinar over the last couple of years. Just a thought.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the strongest rate ever 1365 Dinar to the Dollar?

If that's true, then tomorrow or the next day we will be seeing (more) history in the making!

When the Dinar reaches the 1365 milestone, I think you will FINALLY see main stream media prick up their ears and maybe start running with the story, effectively adding fuel to the fire we know is already ablaze!

10.000.000 of the higher denoms? In that way, they keep the amount that they have taken out of circulation on similar level, and will do this until they are satisfied and ready for a RV?

One would think the distribution of smaller denoms would need a major announcement prior to or at the time of release, this in order to avoid confusion amongst the Iraqi's who might not yet be familiar with the new notes and being the case we would by now know of their distribution.

Sorry, this is not about the dinar. But is a good story about an Iraqi who has the American spirit in him. Mods? Please remove this article as you see fit.

Omar Sattar Hussein - an Iraqi working as a translator for the US army - goes by the nickname "Lucky", having survived, by his count, 37 shootings, 30 bombings and 11 mortar strikes.

He's also lost everything he ever cared about in the world: his family, his fiancee and his friends.

"I didn't choose my nickname. Everyone just started to call me that," he said. "Yeah, I'm lucky with my job. I've survived many attacks, but I'm very unlucky with my private life."

The life of an interpreter for the US army in Iraq is not an easy one. From social ostracism to death at the hands of insurgents, the job is fraught with risk.

"Everybody in Baquba knows my job - I work for the Americans," said Lucky, who, alone among his translator colleagues, does not wear a mask to conceal his identity.

"I have no family anymore. My grandfather told me that I didn't belong anymore, so America is all I have."

Hailing from the restive city of Baquba in Iraq's Diyala province, now the scene of vicious sectarian battles and confessional cleansing, Hussein first learned English in school, but mastered the language from old music cassettes.

Abba, Bryan Adams, Lionel Richie all helped him along his linguistic journey. To this day, his favorite song is the Bee Gees' "Staying Alive".

"That's what it's all about these days in Iraq," he joked.

"When we got a pirated copy of the movie 'The Godfather', I could tell my grandfather everything De Niro was saying. That's when I realized I spoke English."

His close relationship with his grandfather, however, became one more casualty of the war when public opinion in Diyala turned against the Americans in 2004.

"I met with my grandfather and he told me: 'You have to choose between the Americans and your family'," he said.

But by that time, it was too late.

"Everybody knew what my job was, everybody knew that I work for the army and they called me a spy, so I gave him a quick answer - the Americans. What could I do?"

"He said I was no longer part of the family. I love my dad, my mom, my brothers, but I don't see them any more - it's very sad."

Now his friends, and even his fiancee, refuse to speak to him and he stays on base on his days off, just like US soldiers.

His best friend and fellow interpreter Samer, nicknamed "84", was killed in a roadside bomb attack that destroyed the humvee he was riding in.

Lucky has survived 30 of these kind of attacks, including one that earned him a military decoration when he was the only person unharmed in a blast that killed one soldier and wounded two others.

He carried two comrades to safety so that they could eventually be treated for their wounds at a military hospital.

Hussein himself has become pretty familiar with the inside of a US military operating room and he likes nothing better than showing off his collection of scars that stretch from his head to his toes, including a nasty cut on his leg from shrapnel that came from a rocket launched by an Apache attack helicopter.

"If I hadn't been lucky I would probably be dead," he said.

A bit of a show-off, Hussein is one of the rare interpreters who actually speaks English like a native, having particularly mastered American slang and profanity.

His fellow interpreters are constantly checking with him for help in translating Al-Qaeda propaganda found in marketplaces or announcements that the US military wants to make to the public.

"He's really good," said Lieutenant Colonel Morris Goins, the battalion commander, for whom Hussein works directly.

Besides his job, there is really nothing to keep Hussein in Baquba and all he wants to do is get out. His hope now is to take advantage of a naturalization program put in place by the US military for interpreters.

"I sent in all the recommendations I had," he said. "I hope it will work out - it's all I have left."

The Iraqi parliament postponed its today, Tuesday, to tomorrow for lack of quorum, asked the Vice-President of the Council in consultation meeting Accord Front announce its stance on the statements attributed to Chairman Adnan Al-Dulaimi in support of the people of Iraq, which was held recently in Turkey. The meeting today has turned into a consultative meeting because of the absence of a large number of members of Parliament.

He asked the Chair Khaled al-Attiyah, Vice President of the Council of the Iraqi Accord Front, which position statement attributed to the President of the Front Adnan Al-Dulaimi in the support of Iraq, Turkey, which was held last week.

With other members demanded the formation of a commission of inquiry with Mr. Dulaimi to state its position.
The Foreign Relations Committee in the House of Representatives demanded that the Iraqi government summoned the Iraqi ambassador to Turkey in protest nurture the support of the people of Iraq recently.

The Committee demanded in a statement issued today, "summoned the Ambassador of Turkey to Iraq and the Iraqi government informed of the protest."

The Commission invited the Prime Minister, "not to send a delegation to Turkey in the delegations to be sent to neighboring countries and to reconsider the trade and economic relations between the two countries."

He said Dr. Skinner, spokesman of the Iraqi government in a press conference last Thursday that the Iraqi government expresses its regret for the "support of the people of Iraq" in Turkey, and considers that it sends the wrong message to Iraq.

Skinner added in a statement read during the press conference that "this conference, which is held in the neighboring countries would send the wrong message to Iraq translated into violence within the country." He expressed his belief that "such conferences against the Iraqi people."

The President of the Republic, Jalal Talabani keen on the necessity of commitment to the principles of human rights in all joints, and the institutions of the Iraqi State.

This came during a meeting between President Jalal Talabani, today, Tuesday, 19 — 12-2006, the British Prime Minister, his own human rights that Cloide.

Excellencies, pointed during the meeting to the development of human rights in Iraq, committed by terrorists and death squads of violations in this regard, stressing the need to abide by all the international conventions on human rights and their application in the country.

President Talabani also discussed with the British envoy and the latest developments in the political process in the country, affirming keenness of His Excellency to support all efforts to establish a federal, democratic Iraq free from terrorism and extremism.

Good point. But as worthless as their money is right now and with so little goods to buy, how much wear is their currency really getting.
