One call, 30 residents prevent car bombing in Adhamiyah
2nd BCT, 82nd Abn. Div. Public Affairs

CAMP TAJI, Iraq — A phone call to the Adhamiyah Joint Security Station and residents of the eastern Baghdad district helped foil an attempted car bombing July 16.

The Adhamiyah JSS received the call, providing the location of a possible vehicle-borne improvised explosive device in the area. Elements of the 3rd Battalion, 1st Brigade, 11th Iraqi Army Division and 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment investigated the area.

When the troops arrived at the scene, approximately 30 residents identified a parked vehicle as a possible car bomb. The explosives were removed from the vehicle and safely detonated without injury or damage to the community.

“The Iraqi citizens took ownership of their future by alerting the Coalition Forces to this potentially disastrous car bomb,” said Lt. Col. Jeffery Broadwater, commander of 3-7th Cavalry. “This is what it will take to ensure a peaceful Iraq, free from terror and oppression.”

    Multi National Force – West

Camp Ripper, Al Asad, Iraq – Regimental Combat Team 2, located in western Al Anbar province, launched Operation Mawtini July 15th to neutralize any future attempts by Anti-Iraqi Forces to re-establish a presence in key urban areas along the Euphrates River valley.

The operation, calls for over 9,000 U.S Marines, Soldiers, Sailors and Iraqi Army members to strike deep into the less-traveled regions of RCT-2’s operating area,

“We anticipate that the terrorists will attempt to step-up their attacks in the urban areas to regain power and influence over the population” said Col. Stacy Clardy, RCT-2 commander. “We‘re hunting them down to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

Operation Mawtini, which will include the Iraqi Army’s 2nd and 3rd brigades of the 7th division, begins on the heels of Operation Harris Ba’sil which provided a better picture of enemy movement patterns and safe havens. The information gained during Harris Ba’sil will allow the Regiment to conduct focused disruption and security operations in those areas critical to the enemy.

Coalition Forces detain suspected al-Qaeda senior leader in Mosul

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition Forces detained three suspected terrorists during operations in Mosul targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leaders Tuesday.

Coalition Forces captured an alleged al-Qaeda in Iraq leader in Mosul who is believed to have been promoted within the organization after recent Coalition operations created numerous vacancies in the terrorist leadership structure. Intelligence reports also indicate the individual is responsible for mortar and sniper attacks against Iraqi forces and a December attack against Coalition Forces. Two other suspected terrorists were also detained during the Tuesday operation.

“We’re putting continuous pressure on al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders and their networks,” said Maj. Marc Young, an MNF-I spokesperson. “We will continue attacking these networks so Iraqis can live peacefully, without fear of vicious terrorist attacks.”

BAGHDAD — The top target for al Qaeda in Iraq south of Baghdad was killed July 14 in Arab Jabour by precision-guided munitions, the Excalibur.

Shortly after 12 p.m., 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, received a call that Abu Jurah and 14 anti-Iraqi forces were meeting at a house in Arab Jabour.

Abu Jurah was an AQI cell leader and was responsible for improvised explosive devices, vehicle-borne IED and indirect fire attacks on Coalition Forces in Arab Jabour.

At approximately 1:12 p.m., the house was positively identified allowing 1st Battalion, 9th Field Artillery Regiment to fire two Excalibur rounds destroying the meeting house.

An unmanned aerial vehicle observed persons leaving the house, loading injured individuals into a sedan and fleeing the scene.

An AH-64 Apache helicopter engaged the sedan destroying it.
Three people were observed running from the meeting house to a nearby house.

A U.S. Air Force F16 Fighting Falcon dropped two 500-pound GPS-guided bombs on the second house.

Fardh Al-Qanoon Update: MND-B general sees change, progress

    Tuesday, 17 July 2007
    Multi-National Corps – Iraq
    Public Affairs Office, Camp Victory
    APO AE 09342

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    RELEASE No. 20070716-19
    July 16, 2007

Fardh Al-Qanoon Update: MND-B general sees change, progress
    Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAO

BAGHDAD — Five months into Operation Fardh Al-Qanoon a senior leader with the Multi-National Division – Baghdad said Iraqi Security Forces have shown continued improvements since the operation began in mid-February.

“The biggest change since we arrived in Baghdad has been the establishment of the Baghdad Operations Command March 1st,” said Brig. Gen. John F. Campbell, the deputy commanding general for maneuver for MND-B and the 1st Cavalry Division. “That command, under Lt. Gen. Abud, and the subordinate Karkh and Rusafa area commands, has given the Iraqis increased command and control of their own forces. It has enabled them establish a planning process and will help them take the lead in the command and control of division-level operations.”

Campbell called this period of the operation a critical time, as American forces are now in place throughout the country, working side-by-side with their Iraqi counterparts. While a lot of attention has been given to “surge” of American forces, Campbell said nine additional Iraqi Army battalions were also brought into Baghdad as part of Operation Fardh Al-Qanoon.

Campbell noted that nearly 400 separate company-level or higher operations have been conducted with Iraqi Security Forces since the FAQ began in mid-February, with more than 740 weapons caches uncovered through those operations.

The biggest change for U.S. troops since the surge began, Campbell said, is a shift from operating from big base camps to the smaller joint security stations and coalition outposts dotting neighborhoods throughout the Iraqi capital.

The violence against the civilian population of the Iraqi capital has steadily declined since the 1st Cavalry Division arrived to assume control of the MND-B area of operation in mid-November last year. Since the beginning of the year the numbers of kidnappings and murders in Baghdad have declined nearly 50 percent. Overall, attacks against the civilian population have declined by nearly 30 percent in the same period. Campbell said the decline in the violence against civilians is due to the surge of forces, allowing MND-B to leave behind forces in neighborhoods after insurgents have been cleared out, to better control who can get in and out of the neighborhoods.

“We’re maintaining a presence in the neighborhoods and gaining the trust of the Iraqi residents,” Campbell said.

That trust, coupled with Iraqi residents grown tired of extremist violence, Campbell said, has led to tribes in areas of Baghdad to align themselves with Iraqi Security and Coalition Forces. These security force volunteers, who previously may have supported Al Qaeda or other extremist groups, are being vetted to join the Iraqi Police or other security forces.

Campbell said efforts in the Abu Ghraib, Ameriyah and Tarmiyah areas in northwestern Baghdad have the potential to be a key element for the security of Baghdad, as residents begin to reconcile with their government.

“We are in a very tough fight and making steady progress. While we would like to see faster progress, the enemy gets a vote,” Campbell said. “We're seeing positive signs however such as volunteers from the tribes coming forward to become part of the government's security forces in their local areas. In areas like Abu Ghraib and Ameriyah, these volunteers are helping to significantly reduce the violence by partnering with us against Al Qaeda operatives and identifying weapons caches.”
