I thought Kuwait released new banknotes after the Iraqi invasion due to a significant amount being stolen. Thought I read that somewhere sometime ago.

3-day curfew is imposed in Iraq as blasts destroy shrine’s minarets

By Leila Fadel - McCLATCHY NEWSPAPERS
    Updated: 06/14/07 6:51 AM

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s government Wednesday imposed a three-day curfew throughout the country and braced for violence after two thunderous explosions collapsed the remaining minarets of a prominent Shiite shrine whose bombing 15 months ago triggered an orgy of sectarian reprisals that continue to this day.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki angrily summoned the ministers of defense and interior to his office and ordered the detention of the Iraqi soldiers and police who were on guard at the time of the explosions in Samarra.
Officials close to al-Maliki said the prime minister had heard two weeks ago that an attack on the mosque might be imminent, but the two ministers, who oversee the army and the police, had assured him that everything was under control. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Police attributed the explosions to incoming mortar rounds, but witnesses said the blasts came from inside the mosque compound, and al- Maliki aides said they did not believe the police account. A U.S. military official told CNN he believed that the bombing was an inside job.
The shrine, known as the al Askariya Mosque, has held a special place in Iraq’s sectarian violence since its gold dome was destroyed in a huge explosion Feb. 22, 2006. That explosion fueled what was already a rising trend of reprisal killings between Shiite and Sunni Muslims.
Hundreds of Iraqis were killed in the days after that bombing. More than a hundred Sunni mosques in Baghdad were attacked and burned.
In comparison, the response to Wednesday’s blast was muted. Gunmen sprayed bullets at four Sunni mosques in the southern port city of Basra, and Shiite militiamen and Sunni guards battled at a fifth. In Iskandiriya, south of Baghdad, three Sunni mosques were bombed, witnesses said.
In Baghdad, Sunni mosques were attacked in the Jihad and Zaiyuna neighborhoods, according to witnesses. Mahdi Army militiamen took up positions throughout the city whose streets empited as a 72-hour curfew went into effect at 6 p.m.
Al-Maliki traveled to Samarra with Army Lt. Gen. Raymond T. Odierno, the No. 2 U.S. commander in Iraq, to survey the damage. He said the attack came two days before a contract was to be signed to rebuild the shrine.
“By God’s will, we will rebuild the honorable shrine,” al-Maliki said in front of the rubble of the destroyed holy site.
In Washington, the Pentagon, in its latest report to Congress on security, political and economic developments in Iraq from February through May, said violence in the country, as measured by casualties among troops and civilians, has edged higher de****e the U.S.-led security push in Baghdad. The Pentagon also raised questions about al-Maliki’s ability to fulfill a pledge he made in January to prohibit political interference in security operations and to allow no safe havens for sectarian militias.
Overall, however, the report said it was too soon to judge whether the security crackdown was working.
The security operation was launched Feb. 14 and is still unfolding as the last of an additional 28,000 or so U.S. forces are getting into position in and around the Iraqi capital. The Pentagon is required by Congress to provide its initial assessment of the operation in July, and Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, has said he will report in September.
