Moussa, Hashemi underline long way for Iraq reconciliation
Cairo, 05 June 2007 (Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa and visiting Iraqi Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi were concurrent here Monday evening that there was a long way for national reconciliation in Iraq.
They expressed the views at a joint news briefing following their talks.
"The draft reconciliation presented by the government was a good one and had to be a safety valve for all Iraqis. But, unfortunately, it fell short of expectations. We still have a long way to build a strong Iraqi reconciliation, " the Iraqi vice president said.
Asked why innocent Iraqi prisoners were not freed, al-Hashemi said "There was an agreement on ending this dossier in December 2006, but it did not materialize." "The US administration is reluctant to release those innocents," he said.
He added that a draft amnesty that provided for setting free those innocent detainees was yet to be put in place.
On the other hand, he termed the current situation in Iraq as "very worrisome", predicting that some developments could take place in the foreseeable future.
For his part, Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa said talks with the Iraqi leader mainly included the latest situation in Iraq.
Asked about Iranian-US dialogue on the situation in Iraq, Moussa said "Dialogue is the active way to calm matters, resolve problems and preclude a military conflict. We hope two-way dialogue will continue in the interest of calmness." He added that the Iraqi standoff was the core concern of all Arab nations and Iraq's neighboring countries, not only that of Iran and the US.

1260
Hi, what are they playing at, up and down from 1260 to 1259 what is the benifite of doing that, this time they only held it at 1259 for one day, we have been at this situation for several days. it is like standing on a ledge saying shall I jump or not, one step forward one step back. If they are trying to confuse us then they are certainly winning. If this thing was supposed to have been signed off nearly 2 weeks ago then they are certainly going at a snails pace to get there. In the other thread it argues for a slow revalue I cannot see that as we have all the various issues to take into account foreign investment, HCL, paying their people their pensions etc, this cannot happen with a slow revalue and anyway we have been seeing one in that its been over three years since the the new currency was introduced. What do you all think?. Plus the fact if they still continue to withdraw the currency at the rate they have been doing there wont be that much left.

ICEM Supports IFOU in Today’s Oil Industry Strike in Basra
Submitted by davidswanson on Tue, 2007-06-05 10:24. Nonviolent Resistance
Posted on the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions website (icem.org)...
At 6:30 AM this morning, 4 June 2007, oil workers struck the pipeline company in Basra, Iraq, bringing an immediate stop to the free flow of oil products, including kerosene an gas through pipe number 42.
The pipe transfers oil and gas to Baghdad and the governorates of the central region of the country. The workers are members of the Iraqi Federation of Oil Unions (IFOU).
The IFOU, previously known as the GUOE-Basra, and led by President Hassan Jumaa Awad Alasady, has over 26,000 members throughout the ten state oil companies operating in the south of Iraq. The union has a past history of strike action in defense of its members, and the oil industry as a whole of southern Iraq.
The ICEM, the global union federation of national energy unions throughout the world, supports the IFOU in their strike action today.
Earlier strike calls in May were postponed after the union gained a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki. That meeting, on 16 May, resulted in the creation of
a committee tasked with working on finding solutions acceptable to both sides. The ICEM understands that although several of the union demands have been fully agreed to by Iraqi authorities, the IFOU is still far from having all their demands fulfilled. This is what led to today’s strike.
The union is currently focussing on two core demands in its strike at the pipeline company:
• They demand that the Oil Ministry take action to force the general manager of the pipeline company to resign; and
• They demand that the company be financially and administratively independent from the Baghdad-based central ministry, and that the pipeline company be managed locally.
ICEM is informed that the reason for the first demand, and the catalyst for today’s action, is that the general manger of the pipeline company, Adel Aziz, who is based in Baghdad rather than in Basra, blocked the orders of Prime Minister Nouri Al-Mailiki to release delayed benefits due workers. Moreover, he stopped a Iraqi Dinar (IQD)50,000 allowance which the workers are regularly entitled to.
The background is available here.
A second phase of the strike has been threatened to begin tomorrow morning, again at 6.30 AM, in the event the IFOU does not receive signs signalling compliance with their demands. The second phase would expand the strike by closing pipeline number 48, which feeds the southern governorates with oil products.
ICEM, together with the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), US Solidarity Center, and the UK’s Trades Union Congress (TUC) of the UK is following developments closely, and will keep trade union affiliates and the public fully informed on developments in this key dispute.
I just don't get this, why do this, it only delays or causes their suffering to continue economically
