Iran links more Iraq talks to 'US policy change' Wed May 30, 8:17 AM ET

TEHRAN (AFP) - Iran on Wednesday said it would consider continuing talks with the United States over Iraq only if Washington showed it was ready to help Iraq and changed its policies.

The comments by Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki came two days after the US and Iranian ambassadors to Iraq held landmark talks in Baghdad in the highest-level public contacts between the two sides in 27 years.

"The Iranian officials are in the process of looking at the discussions," Mottaki said, according to the ISNA agency.

"If they come to the conclusion that there is a necessary willingness on the American side to solve the problems in Iraq and correct their policies, the discussions can continue," he added.

The talks between Iran's Hassan Kazemi Qomi and Ryan Crocker of the United States appeared to achieve no major breakthrough, with the US side emphasizing that the Iranians were told to stop stirring trouble in Iraq.

Iran has vehemently denied US charges it assists Shiite militias in Iraq and has been behind attacks against US troops, saying an immediate withdrawal of US troops is the best solution to restore security to the country.

Both sides emphasised that the talks only looked at how to restore security to Iraq and did not veer into other contentious issues like Iran's nuclear programme and the wider situation in the Middle East.

The United States severed relations with Tehran in 1980 after student radicals took over its embassy in Tehran, and any exchanges since have normally been marked by mutual animosity and accusations

never mind, just excited here like everybody else!!

I have thought about that aspect as well. In my opinion I think the "buying power" aspect is that although they will be selling their oil, they have to spend a great deal of money to bring it to market. Development costs of the wells, pipelines, etc etc. All the equipment and material for that will have to be imported, so unless they want to deplete their USD reserves, they will need to increase the buying power of the NID. Does that make any sense?

There is an old adage that states "you have to spend money to make money". Why spend pennies when you can revalue them and turn those pennies into dollars? Again, before the bashers get their typing fingers busy, this is just my opinion on this.

I'm excited as well. I think we are closer than we have ever been.
