    The American army confirmed the possibility of a reconciliation with the majority of the gunmen in Iraq and some Al Qaeda elements

    The American army in Iraq on Thursday that it is in discussions with some rebel factions on the possibility of reaching an agreement to a cease-fire and an end to the continuing violence, pointing out that it is possible to reconcile with the majority of armed men, including some elements of al-Qaeda.

    WASHINGTON, May 31 (KUNA) -- US President George W. Bush and Iraqi President Jalal Talabani agreed on Thursday that the Iraqi government must meet a set of reform benchmarks.

    "The president fully understands the need for the Iraqi government to meet certain benchmarks, and he is dedicated to achieving those benchmarks", Bush said in reference to Talabani during a joint White House appearance.

    Bush was referring to the need for the Iraqi Government to adopt of a set of reform laws pertained to oil revenue-sharing, de-Baathification, and provincial elections by the Iraqi government.

    "It is important that you succeed. Failure in Iraq would endanger the American citizens because failure in Iraq would embolden the enemies of a free Iraq", affirmed Bush.

    Talabani, who is in the United States for medical reasons, said he and the Government of Iraq remain committed to political reconciliation.

    "I must tell you that I am committed as the president of Iraq to benchmarks and to do our best to achieve some progress forward for national reconciliation", replied back Talabani.

    "We are committed to do our best to train our army and armed forces to replace gradually the American forces in taking responsibility of security of our country", he added.

    News reports said Talabani came to the United States 10 days ago and was admitted in "Mayo clinic" in Minnesota to undergo medical tests and weight control therapy.

    On political conciliation, Talabani confirmed reports that the Iraqi Government was reaching out to insurgents in a fresh effort to bring them to government decision-making.

    "The main enemies of the Iraqi people is the al Qaeda and terrorists cooperating with them", said Talibani while noting that the Iraqi government is nogotiating with many insurgents "to get them back to the political process".

    Talibani, of Kurdish origin, was sworn as Iraq president in April 2006 and is the founder and secretary general of one of the leading Kurdish party, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). (end) jm.
