Weak foreign transfers bring demand for dollar down in daily auction

Demand for the dollar was down in the Iraqi Central Bank’s daily auction on Tuesday, reaching $47.010 million, compared with $59.600 million on Monday; as today's session saw weak governmental foreign transfers.
In its daily statement, the bank said it had covered all bids, which included $17.540 million in cash and $29.470 million in foreign transfers, at an exchange rate of 1,278 dinars per dollar, unchanged from yesterday.
None of the 11 banks that participated in Tuesday's auction offered to sell dollars.
Ali al-Yasseri, a trader at the auction, told VOI "the decline in today's demand for the dollar was due to the low rate of foreign transfers by governmental departments."
Governmental departments usually resort to foreign transfers to honor their commitments to cover contracts with foreign companies and this, thus, sends demand for the dollar high, al-Yasseri said.
The Iraqi Central Bank runs a daily auction from Sunday to Thursday.

The US Senate will reopen debate Wednesday on a Democratic push to restrict the Iraq war effort after weeks of procedural delays by Republican allies of the White House, Senate leaders said.

Senator Mitch McConnell, head of the Republican minority and a close White House ally, announced Tuesday that his party does not plan to block the opening of a debate on a Democratic bill on pulling US troops out of Iraq by March 31, 2008.

Since February, Republicans have managed to prevent Democrats in the Senate from passing a resolution criticizing President George W. Bush's war policy, and have blocked debate on a proposal to set a pullout timetable.

The effort by Democrats comes in the wake of Bush's plan, announced in January, to increase US troop levels by at least 21,500 soldiers in a last-ditch attempt to restore security in the country.

But the scheduled debate comes as Congress takes on a White House proposal for an expanded budget for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, which will in part cover the Bush troop "surge" strongly opposed by majority Democrats.

While the Democrats have a 51-49 majority in the Senate, it remains unclear if they can muster enough votes to pass a pullout plan opposed by the White House.

Two US soldiers killed in Iraq bombings

Two more US soldiers have been killed in roadside bombs in Baghdad, the military reported on Wednesday.

One bomb struck a combat patrol in the south of the capital on Tuesday, killing a soldier and wounding three, a military statement said.

The same day, another roadside bomb in northeastern Baghdad killed one soldier and wounded another, it said.
