This is fact....$800 billion in gold. Translate that into 1980's prices, which ranged from $300 - $400/oz and you get approximately 80 tons.

it was an article that stated that much gold was in switzerland to back the dinar at the rate saddam had set. therefore, the theory that his rate was arbitrary was indeed bunk.

the issue with that gold at the time was that alot of it had been stolen/moved from switzerland. at date of print the article insinuated that they were seeking the whereabouts of that misplaced gold. no word since then if they found an oz. although, our very own gold location sleuth may have more information on this subject as she has kept track.

The General Council, on 13 December 2004, established working parties to examine, respectively, the membership applications of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Afghanistan was invited to attend meetings of the General Council, and as appropriate, meetings of other WTO bodies as an observer.

Ambassador Assad Omer, Permanent Representative of Afghanistan, in thanking members, said that after two decades of conflict, his government has significantly improved the economic climate.

“The peaceful completion of our first direct presidential elections ... has heralded a new era of political stability”, he said.

Ambassador Omer said that his country hoped to re-establish itself as the land bridge for trans-continental trade.

“We believe that participation in the international trading system will lead to more trade, investment, technology transfer, employment and income growth throughout the economy”, he said.

Iraq was invited to continue attending meetings of the General Council and, as appropriate, meetings of other WTO bodies as an observer.

Trade Minister Mohammed Mustafa Al-Jibouri said his country viewed the decision as “yet another contribution on the part of the WTO to Iraq's efforts to reform its economy”.

He said that since the General Council's decision last February to grant observer status to Iraq, his government has started accession preparations in earnest, including the drafting of its Foreign Trade Regime Memorandum and the creation of a National Committee for WTO Accession.

“The new Iraq looks with great optimism at achieving political stability, economic prosperity and social development ... we believe that our reintegration into the world trading system is an essential element to fulfil those aims,” he said.

Regarding another membership request, that from Iran, the Chairman, Ambassador Shotaro Oshima of Japan, reported on his recent consultations. He said that although it was clear that a large part of the membership continued to be supportive of an early and positive action on this request, there was still no consensus at that stage to accept the request and to set up a working party for this purpose.

i made a post about wto ascession a few days ago when someone asked about it. it was everything i found on the wto site about it and the article that stated they were going to be members in february and it insinated they needed to make the currency internationally convertible before that happened.

President sends letter to Syrian President thanked at the end of an official visit to Damascus

BAGHDAD, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Senior Iraqi officials will meet again on Tuesday in an effort to resolve a last-minute hitch in plans to present a landmark law on the oil industry to cabinet this week, senior government sources said.

Since the Oil Ministry announced last week that the Oil Committee, comprising cabinet ministers and regional leaders, had finalised a deal, officials from the Kurdish regional government have demurred, saying they were still dissatisfied.

One senior member of the committee told Reuters on Tuesday that after a meeting late on Monday he was confident that the dispute would be resolved.

The draft law is characterised by the Iraqi and U.S. governments as vital to secure billions of dollars of foreign investment to revive Iraq's oil industry and to dampen ethnic and sectarian conflicts over the distribution of revenues.

The draft, as released by the Oil Ministry last week, gives the national government a right of review over existing contracts signed under former President Saddam Hussein or by the Kurdish regional government.

Kurdish officials say the wording does not satisfy their demand that existing contracts be reviewed only by the regional government itself to ensure that they conform with the new draft regulations.

Among such contracts, one is with Norway's DNO <DNO.L>.

Some Kurdish officials have told Reuters that the Oil Committee, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Barham Salih who is himself a leading Kurdish politician, pushed through the draft last week without consulting them.
