Exxon, partners reach milestone at Iraqi oil field

Exxon Mobil Corp.'s subsidiary in Iraq said on Monday that the company and its partners at a large oil field under development in southern Iraq have exceeded a production target.

The initial field production of 244,000 barrels per day at the Qurna I field has increased to 285,000. That nearly 17 percent rise exceeds a target under a technical services contract that called for a 10 percent improvement in production, according to ExxonMobil Iraq Ltd., a unit of the Irving, Texas-based parent company.

Exxon Mobil's partners in the project include two Iraqi state-owned companies and an affiliate of Royal Dutch Shell PLC. The field's lead contractor, with a 60 percent interest, is ExxonMobil Iraq. More than 1,600 Iraqis are working at the 8.6 billion barrel field, one of Iraq's largest.

Under an agreement between Iraq and the companies, production from the West Qurna I field should reach 2.825 million barrels a day after 6 to 7 years.
