Iraqi demands to accelerate again in the appointment of a Minister for Electricity

renewed Iraqi List led by Iyad Allawi's claim Thursday to speed up the appointment of a minister of electricity to solve the problem of the deterioration in power several years ago amid expectations of an increase in the exports of the country's oil.

position of Iraq, after the previous statements of its candidate to fill the bag was considered the worldwide abolition of electricity Ziad where to save Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki filled the position of "unjustified", pointing out that there is a near consensus of most of the blocks on the leadership of the Ministry. The MP said Alaa Makki, a Kurdish news agency (Rn) that "to accelerate the appointment of a minister of electricity and the implementation of the contracts entered into years ago and stopped, are important to resolve the crisis of electricity."

And the granting of the Iraqi parliament in December last, the confidence to Maliki's government after painstaking negotiations which lasted several months, while the deputies voted a big majority in favor of 33 ministers out of 42 ministerial portfolios comprising the government, while the remaining other ministries vacant has not been decided is a number of them so far. The Iraqi List of nine ministries, in addition to the posts of Vice-President and Ministers, and the presidency of the National Council for the strategic policy.

The Mackie "I have been paid large sums of money in order to import equipment, tools and equipment and all that would provide electric power, and have found that many of these devices do not work and not enough (to meet the shortfall in energy), as well as a lot of contracts that have been frozen and led to a negative impact in the provision of electricity. "

He wondered, "Why does not end with the Prime Minister and Minister of choice for electricity?".

And several Iraqi cities were seen in the summer of last year, the most widespread protests in the province of Basra because of the electricity crisis, and claimed the lives of many, and forced the Minister of Electricity Karim Wahid to resign for "failure" in the provision of electricity to the population. Mekki said that "Iraq put a question mark on the subject of selection and Minister of Electricity and calls once again to the need to accelerate the acceptance of one of the candidates and efficient for this ministry, to reform this sector."

Did not succeed to the oil-rich Iraq now is to solve the power crisis in spite of expectations to increase its oil exports to four million barrels per day year-end. And suffer the electricity network in the whole of Iraq from a lack of energy production over the past years due to exposure stations and transport networks to major damage when the invasion of Iraq in 2003, followed by acts of sabotage by armed groups.

Electricity Ministry to add 1,200 megawatts to Iraqi national grid in summer

The Electricity Ministry should be able to add 1,200 megawatts to the national grid once the repairs and maintenance of several power stations in the country is completed, according to a government official.

The claim, made by Musaab Mudaris, the ministry’s spokesman, comes as many Iraqi cities like Baghdad hardly enjoy two hours of uninterrupted power supplies.

But Mudaris said the repairs were of a scale that should improve supplies during the hot summer season in which demand peaks.

Four major power stations were mentioned by Mudaris to have undergone major repairs: Baiji, Musayab, Qudus and Nasiriya.

However, Mudaris did not make clear whether the 1,200 megawatts are a part of the plants’ original capacity or the result of reconstruction.

Seven years after U.S. invasion and billions of dollars in investments, Iraqis still have less electricity than in the months preceding the fall of Baghdad to U.S. troops in 2003.

2011 budget contains positive aspects for provinces – minister

The 2011 budget contains several positive aspects for the interests of provinces, said Minister of Finance Rafie al-Issawi during a visit to the southern Iraq province of Basra on Thursday.

“Our discussions with the governor of Basra revolved around two points: the 2011 budget for Basra that must be transformed into Iraq’s economic capital, and the finance ministry’s plans to activate its role in the areas of pensions, taxes, customs and banking,” Issawi said in a conference at the Basra province office.

“We have emphasized some measures, including the need to avoid depriving Basra from petrodollars as well as investment projects,” he added.

The oil-rich port city of Basra, Iraq’s only outlet to waterways, lies 590 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
