Pig iron is the immediate product from reduction of iron ore by coal or coke and limestone in a blast furna
The pig usually contains up to 5% of carbon, which makes it a brittle material and without much direct use.

Typically in industrial processes, pig iron is considered as an alloy of iron and carbon, contain from 4 to 4.5% carbon and other so-called residual elements such as silicon, manganese, phosphorus and sulfur, among others.
The pig iron is poured directly from the blast furnace crucible to containers to form ingots, or used directly in its liquid state in steelworks.

The ingots are then used to produce iron and steel, to extract the carbon in excess.

Chinese produced pig iron in the late Zhou Dynasty. In Europe, the process only became common from the fourteenth century. Brazil stands out as a producer of pig iron from charcoal, being the largest world producer
