I am sure we will have a fun time here in Penang. It will be my pleasure to guide you around my home state. One of Penang's charms is its streetmarkets, night markets and bazaar. Hidden away in the corners of Georgetown is one such place called Lorong Kulit (skin alley??) One can find things like antiques, old collectible currency and coins to chinese dynasty pottery. Bargain for the best deal. What's on sale depends varies and you'll be surprised everytime. I know I am everytime I get the chance to visit. Old glassware that I've not seen since my grandfather was still alive, books, cassettes and all sorts of trinkets. Exciting?

    (a photo of the traders)

Looking forward to you trip here, Nej and all of you who wish to visit. Remember 2007 is Visit theBat$ year...err I mean Visit Malaysia Year

Well, we have to wait for the Dinar to r/v first, otherwise the next trip will be a long way off...

When I went before we ended up in Batu Ferrenghi, and hadn't booked anywhere to stay (we did a week-long trip around Thailand in the same manner) so just turned up to various hotels until we found an affordable one that had rooms free, I can't remember what it was called now - it was quite late when we got there as the ferry took hours due to it being a school holiday or something - massive queues!

Yes, I understand Nej. I'll be waiting no worries, mate!

Penang has many places to stay. But if you are staying in Batu Ferringhi, its a bit further from town but just as fun! There are a few new hotels up since you came by. The Rasa Sayang Hotel now is spanking new! I can make the bookings for the hotel for you in advance, so you can check in right away.

Ferry service is like that and so is the Penang Bridge during school breaks and other festivals, a lot of traffic. Hopefully by 2010 we're getting another bridge to ease the congestion. This means Penang is a popular place even with locals!

    See you all soon!

theBat$ - thinking about R/V he he he

Talking Can't wait to taste Malaysian food?

Mmmmmm.... the aroma of satay wafting from the grill and the ever delectable peanut sauce dip makes anyone's mouth water. The meat marinated in tumeric and other spices (chicken or beef) is skewered on bamboo skewers and grilled. It is a popular dish among the locals and tourist. Now you can make it at home. Great for BBQ and Cook Outs.

I am giving away free instructions on how to make Satay, for the ladies and gentlemen who want to try it out.

For the free instructions PM me with your email and receipe request if you have any.

Looks like you got to come visit Malaysia to taste the food!

My country's postal service has informed me that food/mixes are not allowed to enter in certain countries such as the US. Please check with your local authorities.

    Hello thebat$,

I have been following this site for a long time - but don't post much - am now since I think an rv maybe within the next few months (hopefully sooner rather than later).

My sister and her family are moving to Singapore just after Christmas and I am organising to go and visit around Easter time next year - rv or no rv. However, I think it will have rv'd by then anyway.

I would definitely enjoy a trip to Malaysia and would like to contact you nearer the time for ideas and places to visit. I have read through this thread and it all sounds marvellous. It would be lovely to meet with you or even just have some fantastic ideas for things to do. I particularly like the idea of visiting night markets - just my cup of tea. Thank you for all your information.

When in Singapore, head for Satay Village and be subjected to an array of restaurants specialising this meaty delicacy on woody skewers and delicious gravy that culminates the excitement on just this special dish alone!

When in Malaysia, the town named Kajang is a popular haunt for traditional Satays.... worth paying a drive to that location within the province of Johore, just across the Causeway after leaving Singapore.

But drive further north, some 5 hours drive and rendezvous with thebat$, and he will guide you as no other could for his nostalgic, quaint native island that still reflects great heritage to colonial days of the British rule back then.

Btw, when you fly with Singapore Airlines, I usually do myself, Satay is served too...

YB. cheers and have a nice Easter when in Singapore.

Next year is Visit Malaysia Year. Surely a lot of activities in store. I hope to get the list of activities to post here.

Malaysia has a lot to offer. Night markets is just one of them. There is night markets everyday in different locations of Penang. Morning market, flea markets and bazaars are equally fun! The sights and sound and smell of the markets are an experience. This morning they were selling a type of delicacy called "Shek KeK Ma" or a type of biscuit made by first frying the bite sized dough pieces then covering them in thick syrup, mixing them together and shaped into blocks. This all done in a big wok.

It was a really nice to get a look at it first hand. Yummy!

Okay. Let's hope for a r/v! Go IQD.

    Talking What's a cendul?

MALACCA: Even in Scotland, Malacca cendol is well known.
Scotsman Alasdair Dunn, who is on holiday here, said he heard about the famous cendol pulut sold at the "mangosteen shaped stall by the riverside, opposite the clock tower".

"My buddies were talking about it over a few drinks in a pub back home. They told me that this dessert is so good that my trip here will be wasted if I didn’t try it at least once."

"This is good stuff! It’s sweet and creamy. I would surely have regretted if I did not stop for this dessert," said Dunn, who was among several customers at stall operated by Mohamad Kassim Mohd Ali Jinna.

Mohammad Kassim is a third generation cendol seller. His grandfather, Kadir Meera, started the business using a four-wheel cart in front of the old Rex theatre in the 1950’s.

When his father, Mohd Ali Jinna, took over in the 1980’s, he started selling at the riverside in front of the clock tower.

In 1995, when the state government built the fruit shaped stalls by the riverside during its ‘local fruits’ campaign, Mohd Ali Jinna got a permanent site — the mangosteen shaped stall.

Mohammad Kassim, 25, took over the business from his father in 1998.
"It is probably in the blood. I have never wanted to do anything else," he said.

From his profits he has started a cybercafe business but will continue to sell cendol.

Asked for the secret of his cendol, he said it was the fresh coconut milk and gula melaka.
New Straits Times - Malaysia News Online

It's yummy. It's little green jellylike strands and topped with shaved ice, coconut milk and thick sweet fragrant palm sugar. Red beans, pieces of glutinous rice, grass jelly and shaved ice are optional additions. There are many incarnations depending on where you are in Malaysia.

In Melaka : Durian Cendul, Glutinous Rice Cendul
In Penang : Cendul with mix local fruits, Cendul with Ice-Cream
    In Kedah : Cendul

It is a kin of the Ice-Kacang or ABC which is more eleborate.

So which Cendol is the best of the Best? You decide. If you are visiting Melaka, try it out. It will make you a fan of it. Drop by Penang for the Cendol which tourist rave about and come by the tour bus loads. Standing in an alley, oblivious to the traffic, slurping down this delicious dessert is a sight to watch. If you are ever there, please do give way to the car, sometimes your behind can be blocking its way.

theBat$ likes Cendol Durian...mmmmm but Penang Cendul ok too!

p/s chendul, chendol, cendul, cendol or cendoi... as it is pronouced by local penangites means the same thing. All good!
