NEW YORK: Tourism Malaysia here is pushing for a spot at a food festival in Orlando’s Walt Disney World to promote the country’s culinary delights and handicrafts.
“We are discussing with them on the concept for the promotion,” Tourism Malaysia’s vice-president Mohamad Taib Ibrahim said.
The 45-day International Food and Wine Festival, held annually at the Epcot theme park, is expected to attract 1.5 million visitors next year.
Mohamad Taib said Tourism Malaysia would pump in RM2mil to promote Visit Malaysia Year 2007.
“As far as branding is concerned, our theme ‘Malaysia, Truly Asia’ has been very, very successful.”
(1) The number of American tourists had gone up by almost 17% to 99,330 in the first half of this year, compared with the same period in 2005, he said.
“We are targeting about 200,000 American visitors next year,” he said. Last year, the number came up to 151,354.
(2) He said Sabah and Sarawak were the main draw for them, adding that the global attention on China had also led to greater interest in Malaysia.
The Americans would stay in Malaysia for about eight nights. They are mostly males (75%), married (68%) and almost two-thirds are first-time visitors.
“We also found out that most of them heard about our tourist attractions through word of mouth,” said.
According to them, their best impressions of the country were its people, the islands and the natural beauty.
Mohamad Daud also described Malaysia Airlines’ decision to maintain its thrice-weekly flights to New York as good news because it would certainly help in the promotional efforts.
At present, he said MAS also flies five times a week to Los Angeles. There are plans to introduce daily flights next year.
Disney food fest may feature Malaysian fare
Reasons why (1) come here is that Malaysia offers a variety of experience for the American and other tourists. Our main draw includes multi-cultural background, pristine beaches, scuba diving, mountain climbing, jungle trekking to shopping, dining and sightseeing. Another good reason is the USD1 to RM3.75 conversion. Puts a smile on any travellers face.
(2) Sabah and Sarawak or East Malaysia is famous for eco tourism. Beautiful diving in the Sipadan Islands, Climb South East Asia highest peak, Mt. Kinabalu or drop by the Orang Utan Research Center in Sepilok all in Sabah. While over in Sarawak, visit longhouses, ride into the rainforest and experience the culture of the "orang asli" or Natives there with their colorful culture and customs and also don't forget the Niah Caves. See how the precious swiftlet bird's nest are harvested. These birds usually remain in one cave or other roosting/nesting site. Some examples of caves include the Niah Caves, Gunung Mulu National Park, and Niah National Park which are all located in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo.
Hope that you find the info useful. Have a nice vacation! Mari! Mari!

Hong Kong and the United States are the largest importers of these nests. In Hong Kong a bowl of Bird Nest Soup would cost $30 to $100 US dollars. A single white nest can cost up to $2,000, and a “red blood” nest can cost up to $10,000. (Source Wikipedia)
