The iPhone 3G was poorly built, (especially the white model) and after a year the case started to crack and disintegrate. I don't think this was intentional design, but a 24-month old iPhone3G was a sorry looking creature.
The iPhone4, on the other hand is a beast of a device with a bulletproof stainless-steel chassis. iPhone4s that are more than four years old are still looking like they could go on forever.
My wife's 2010 phone has been dropped into a stream, dropped into a toilet. Dropped in mud and then stepped upon. And apart from a couple of barely-visible scratches, looks brand new.
The black iPhone 5 had a layer of anodisation which could get scratched off, revealing bright aluminum beneath. This causes wear/patination but no loss of function.
