Outcry over caning
PETALING JAYA (Feb 18, 2010): The announcement yesterday by Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein that three women were caned 10 days ago for committing illicit sex under Syariah laws took the nation by surprise.
More so when part-time model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno is still waiting to be similarly punished after she was sentenced by the Kuantan syariah court last year but whose case has been delayed as several issues were still unresolved.
Among the questions asked by several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) were the secrecy with which the women was caned, when they were arrested and when were they sentenced.
Sisters in Islam (SIS) ****utive director Dr Hamidah Marican said in a statement that the punishment meted out for illicit sex under syariah laws violates human rights while discriminating against Muslim women in Malaysia.
"Whipping of women under Syariah Criminal Offences legislation contradicts civil law where women are not punishable by caning under Section 289 of the Criminal Procedure Code," she said.
Hishammuddin had announced on Wednesday that three Muslim women were caned in the Kajang Prison on Feb 9 — nine days after the punishment was carried out.
He said seven Syariah offenders comprising four men and three women had been caned with six of them receiving six strokes while the seventh, a woman, received four strokes.

Perkasa Sends Protest Note, Deems Australian Interference Unethical
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 18 (Bernama) -- The interference by the Australian Members of Parliament (MPs) in Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy charge is an act of arrogance which goes against the ethics of non-interference in the sovereignty of another country, the National Indigenous Organisation (Perkasa) said.
Independent MP Datuk Ibrahim Ali said the letter, signed by 50 MPs, was also unwarranted, reflecting an uncivilized and ignorant act on their part with regard to Malaysia's laws and political scenario.
"However, I do not blame your act as I presume you and your colleagues have been 'misled' and do not know the actual background to the case and the persons involved," Ibrahim, who is Perkasa president, said in his protest note to the Chairman of the Australian Parliament's Foreign Affairs Subcommittee, Michael Dandy, Thursday.
A foreign news agency had recently reported that more than 50 Australian lawmakers had lodged a formal protest, urging Malaysia to drop the opposition leader's sodomy trial.
Member of governing Labour party Michael Danby handed the protest note to Malaysian High Commissioner Salman Ahmad in Canberra on Friday.

Malay NGOs hold protest, burn effigy of Guan Eng (Updated)
GEORGE TOWN: A group of Malay non-governmental organisations staged a protest at Komtar here after Friday prayers to object against what they claimed was discrimination in the demolition of illegal hawker stalls, burning an effigy of Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng in the process.
The crowd had earlier congregated at Masjid Jamek Simpang Enam before Friday prayers and walked to Komtar in Jalan Magazine, which houses the state government offices, to hand over a memorandum to Lim.
Police failed in trying to block the crowd from staging the walk.
The protest was organised by the Penang Malay Chamber of Commerce and National Malay Students Federation (GPMS).
Also joining the protest was the head of Perkasa, Datuk Paduka Ibrahim Ali, who is also Pasir Mas MP.
When representatives from the group failed to meet Lim at his office in Komtar, the crowd set an effigy representing Lim on fire. They also burnt the memorandum.
Police, including Federal Reserve Unit, were also at the scene to carry out crowd control.
'They don't know the facts'
When told of the incident, Lim brushed off the demonstration as a gathering of people who “do not know the true facts of the situation.”
He said records clearly showed that there had been a larger number of non-bumiputra hawkers who had been brought to book over the last two years.
