Iraq Sunnis to celebrate Eid on Monday
Baghdad, Oct 22, (VOI) – Iraqi Sunnis will celebrate the Moslem Eid al-Fitr on Monday to mark the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, Iraqi Sunni Endowment said on Sunday.
“As the sighting of the new moon was not possible on Saturday evening, Sunday should be the last day of Ramadan and Monday should be the first day of Eid al-Fitr,” the endowment said in a statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) on Saturday night.
Iraqi Kurds will also celebrate Eid on Monday.
Meanwhile, the highest Shiite religious authority Ali al-Sistani ordered observing the new moon on Monday. If the crescent was sighted, the Eid would start on Tuesday, otherwise the Shiites will start celebrating Eid on Wednesday.
The timing of Eid can vary in different countries depending on the sighting of the new moon, which marks the start of the month in Islam’s lunar calendar.
