Give me a late quiet evening in a rowing boat at a calm sea and a line of hooks hanging from the rear.. I am rowing slowly over the best fishing place.
I stop rowing and pull the line of hooks up - It has a fish on every second hook! That’s what I call fishing!!!!!! :wink:

My mother was/is an excellent fish cook and I can still see her in my head preparing all the fish my father took home for her to make fishcakes and other delicious food for us.....ummmmm! :wink:
We were 8 children in my family and needed a lot of fish........ :)

nice halibut there , we catch halibut here too but smaller & in a lot deeper water than they usually fish in Alaska. A friend of mine was a captain at some lodge in Alaska for several years, he said they usually fished in 60-120 feet of water. around here they fish in 800-900 feet. You use 40 ounces of lead to get the bottom or more if there is any wind ! I know of a few people that have electric reels for fishing that deep I hate bringing up my line unless I have a fish on ( I don't have an electric reel) Well when things get going again we might have to have a fishing trip to Alaska ?
By the way yes I have caught halibut here & skate & octopus on my halibut fishing trips.

Nothing like a late, or all-nighter, out on the lake when a brood of massive lunker cats come looking for late night summer breeding. Those chicks (female cats) know how to slam dunk a line that will get your adrenaline pumping like you can't imagine, if it doesn't break your line the moment they strike. Have fun!!

not sure on your last reply yogi , did you mean you have fun reeling them in or not ? If you have fun reeling them in maybe you should try catching a white sturgeon on the Columbia River . You can only keep sturgeon between 40-60 inches but there is a lot of sport fishing for the bigger ones. they will use something like a 5 pound shad for bait, if you get ahold of one of the bigger ones (14 foot plus!) you could be there a couple of hours or more. In the early 1900's they would use a team of horses to catch bigger sturgeon , I've seen a picture from the 1920"s of a 26 foot sturgeon .Now that was a lot of fish!
http://wlapwww.gov.bc.ca/kor/fsh/mai...on_release.jpg...that's a good size for an average "large" sturgeon catch...abt the size of a Moose Pike I once reeled in for a Shell Outdoor Competition held at the moose lakes in Canada some years back.
Regarding the reeling in of those you wondered, I meant that it WAS NO PLEASURE simply because of my personal dislike for that species and their meat is pretty ghastly in taste!!!

where I live the sturgeon come into the shallow bays & upstream a little. In the shallow water they will fight & run as good as a large chinook salmon. There is not as many here as on the columbia river but it is still enjoyable and for a bonus when we're fishing in the bay we'll set out our crab traps for some dungeness crabs too!

Well for the last couple of days I have been doing other things than fishing , I have been trying to help my father find an elk (american indian name wapita) but no luck so far . The season ends in 3 days so after that I'll be trying to catch some more of those fall chinook salmon .

I usually hunt with a bow . It is a lot more challenging , and when I get a bull to bugle back & come in to my calls , that is the most enjoyable & exciting part . well today I had to go to work but I stopped for a few minutes after work & caugt a smaller chinook salmon (estimate about 22 -23 pounds ) Maybe tomorrow I can get a larger one, the largest chinook I've caught is a 45 pounder, I want to break that someday,I know they have caught 65 pounders around here (last year even) and my brothers father -in-law"s cousin holds the record on one of the rivers here for regular tackle, 84 pounds. definately a sleek drink holder you have there
Love fishing out in the sea and since I am only 10 minutes away from the gulf, it's a given.
Fresh grouper, snapper and lobster...............ohhhhhhhhhh yeah!!

hi moneyduck , I am close to the ocean too, only 10 minutes to the docks in the bay from my home ,but the waters around here are a little more frigid. Usually in August the waters will warm up enough to bring tuna this far north (usually about 30 miles from shore)

I haven't seen anything new in here for a while , if I knew how to post a picture from my files I would put up an old picture of a 45 pound salmon I caught . Well someday I will take the time to figure it out maybe but not until I have to learn how to :blush:
