Why people die in their sleep
If you die in your sleep of natural causes, what are the “natural causes”?
Any cause of death that isn’t unnatural (suicide, homicide, accident) is natural. So it could be anything.
Usually, when people die in their sleep, it’s from something that happens too quickly to wake them up, or else from something that causes unconsciousness before it causes death. Heart or lung failure can kill in your sleep. A massive stroke can kill you before you have a chance to notice anything’s gone wrong. Sometimes people’s bodies just wear out—we call it becoming frail—and even the doctors can’t tell what specifically caused their death, because they had so many health issues all at once.
If a young, relatively healthy person dies in their sleep, it tends to be categorized as “sudden cardiac death”—a heart attack, usually due to a congenital heart defect that caused a fatally disturbed heart rhythm rather than the typical blocked coronary arteries. For young people with epilepsy, it might be SUDEP (sudden death in epilepsy)—a seizure that wouldn’t stop until it starved the brain and killed the person. Both sudden cardiac death and SUDEP are rare, and usually don’t happen in one’s sleep; but they can.
