Who are some of the best role models for young black women today?

Great role models are all around us—the women who give their time and talents to our schools, our churches, our civic organizations and volunteer groups, our family matriarchs; our local business owners who give back to the community. We honestly don’t have to look far to find them.

Certainly this year has been full of #BlackGirlMagic, especially at the Rio Olympics. Any one of these incredible women shine a light on how to make your dreams come true with hard work, perseverance, strength and resilience.

Each month we feature outstanding Black women who can and do serve as role models for so many of us. We tell their stories so that others can be inspired. I’m encouraged by the brilliance of women like Shonda Rhimes, Uzo Aduba, Misty Copeland, Michelle Obama, Audra McDonald, Lupita Nyong’o and so many thousands others, who utilize their platforms to be the change in this world. These are the women we spotlight on our covers, so that others can learn from their examples, and perhaps dream bigger dreams for themselves too.
