.59 to the dollar would be that percentage OF the dollar. just as theyve always stated it. for example they say .31:1 which is saying thirty one percent of the dollar, NOT THIRTY ONE CENTS. same thing the bank of baghdad says which equates to $3.22 or whatever.
so, .59 to the dollar would be $1.69 which is suspiciously close to the yazzamen rate, isnt it dd??
OK guys, I am still confused about this. I do not understand this conversion at all...how .59 converts to 1.69. Susie, or anyone else, could you break this down more for us new folks? If possible a step-by-step breakdown would help tremendously. Or, if there is a thread somewhere that outlines this, a link to that thread would be greatly appreciated. I have been thinking, like others as I am seeing, that .31 would be 31 cents to our dollar; likewise, .59 would be 59 cents. If someone could point me in the right direction to understand how this works, I say many thanks up front.

Take 1 dollar and divide it by .59 and you get 1.69

I would have never thought of it that way. We have always been taught in math class that .59 would be 59 hundredths or 59/100, not 100/59. Thanks for the explanation, that does clear up the means of arriving at that number. Even though it is backward (to me anyway), I like 1.69 much better than .59 (and yes, I am talking about 59 cents).

    Woooohooooo, let's run with it

I have had a hard time grasping the idea of this as well. but my take is that at .59, I could go over to s afe dinar . com and use their exchange rate calculator and it would tell you the amount. this saves me on confusion. sorry to the mods, i am not trying to hype this other site just a tool they have on the site.

When an Iraqi says .59 to the dollar, his focus is on the dinar and not the
dollar. In other words, he is saying that one dollar is equivalent to .59
dinars. If one dollar equals .59 dinars, then by applying standard math
you determine that one dinar equals $1.69.

This is not unlike the phraseology that a Georgian and a Floridian use
when referring the the annual football game between the two schools.
The Georgian calls it the Georgia-Florida game, and the Floridian calls it the
    Florida-Georgia game.

Similarly, if this analysis turns out to be accurate, an American would probably say that one dollar equals .59 dinars, and an Iraqi would probably say that one dinar equals 1.69 dollars.

    Default Sorry For The Misunderstanding

I should have clarified my post better. He did indeed say 59 cents to the dinar. I do like your scenario better though SGS. Lets hope it got translated
wrong and you are the one that is right. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
