Why am I poor?

As Lady Gaga so eloquently might put it, they were “Born This Way”.

The vast majority of poor people had poor parents. They were born into poverty and it was unlikely they would possess some sort of superior talent that would get them out of poverty.

They came into school without knowing much, probably because their parents had a poor vocabulary and not too many books around the house. They trailed their peers and, if they didn’t, it was because their peers were in the same boat and the entire class was way behind the curve.

Most societies have very poor income mobility. If you’re in the bottom 20%, chances are you will stay there, particularly if you’re an American. You live in a bad neighbourhood and have bad schools.
