What are your thoughts on plastic surgery?

I was once adamantly opposed to plastic surgery, with the obvious exception of those patients for whom it was a medical necessity—i.e. victims of accidents, cancer survivors, children with congenital anomalies. Those aren't the only cases, but you get the idea.


I didn't understand why somebody couldn't just learn to accept who they were, be comfortable in the skin they were given. Nose jobs, breast augmentation, tummy tucks—I thought it was all just an extreme form of vanity as well as a waste of money better spent on anything else.


I wasn't outspoken about this, didn't judge those who decided to go through with procedures (at least, not out loud), but these were my thoughts.


Until…


I had my first child. And then I had my second. My second son was in NICU for seven weeks, and even after he came home, he had to have his breast milk mixed with formula and a thickener, so I had to pump. I don't know if it was the pumping or the quick weight loss due to the stress of our situation, but my breasts were ruined. They looked awful, so awful I was embarrassed to even be naked around my husband.


I dealt with this for five years. I tried to get over it, and I couldn't. My entire viewpoint changed. If this is how people who desired plastic surgery felt, then I understood.


I got the breast augmentation done for me, and I've never once regretted it. I didn't do it to have big boobs or to look great in a bikini. I did it to get my confidence back, to feel comfortable in my own skin when I looked in the mirror. If a surgery can empower someone like that, can make someone feel better about themselves, more confident, then I say go for it.

I think there's no problem with it since it's your face , you can do whatever you want with it. If it makes you confident, then go ahead! Better than feeling insecure. Some people say that getting confidence from people's validations isn't good but most plastic surgery patients are doing this for themselves, not for anyone else. The bad side of it is that it can be a waste of money though. As long as you're informed about the side effects or risks, then it's ok. Just because you get surgery, it doesn't mean its vanity.
