What does the moment of impact from a gun shot feel like? Do you immediately know you were shot?

In 1999, I was hijacked in Atlanta, Georgia by a man holding a .45 cal automatic. He told me to drive and then stop in a secluded area. At that point, he put the gun to my temple and my reflexes at that age were awesome- fast- so I pushed the gun away from my head but the ensuing gun shot went through my thumb, leaving a huge hole and the ability to see right through my thumb. I was seeing missing bone separating my thumb. In that instant I didn’t feel any pain. I started pummeling the shooter and he wrangled the pistol out of my 4 fingers that were still working but my left hand really beat the hell out of the hijacker.

Although he was collapsing, he got another 4 rounds off into my abdominal area first, making me unsteady. Another stray shot hit my right thigh, piercing it and because of the position I was in, went out the front of my right shin. I also felt nothing below my waist now. I was paralyzed from the waist down. Pain, absolutely none physically but I looked down and started seeing blood spurting from my various wounds. But I still felt no pain. I was rushed to Grady, underwent trauma surgery then died on the table only to be brought back. My body went into what is known as sepsis shock, killing me.

As for pain, I didn’t feel a thing . As for psychological pain , that started when my company said I wasn’t shot then stated I wasn’t on duty(truck driver loaded with 6 tall rolls of paper bound for Pinebrook, NC. They came up with 7 different scenarios as to why my work comp was denied. Corporations can fabricate lies to deny you workman’s compensation but if you lie, you go to jail. Imagine that?!) The week ending in my shooting (9/26/1999) had 7 truckers total get hijacked & robbed then shot or stabbed or both. 4 lived, 4 died. Yeah, I fell into both categories. But the pain was never about being shot as I felt nothing. But as far as what damage was done- it took me 3 months to get back on my feet to walk which I had to relearn. I am still missing my left quadricep muscle as I watched it disintegrate in 3 days. It has taken years to get back to walking semi normal. I still can’t run.

The pain? I felt absolutely nothing physically. My stay at Grady and Crestview was horror too! Read my other answer about “As a medical professional, have you ever seen something to make you vomit?” Yeah I responded and still get negative remarks that I wasn’t a medical professional. Yeah I’m schooled in all levels of education but not certified medical.
