Is G20 more important than G7?
Which is more important to the world, G7 or G20?
The G20, by far.
The G7 has become a complete joke.
The G7 is made up of :
The USA
Canada
The following EU nations
Germany
Italy
France
The United Kingdom
Japan
There are literally 3 blocks. All allied (broadly), all in different regions. Most of these countries while developed, don’t go on America’s global adventures, are each very different, very pretty insular societies. Arguably they are all in decline. Canada is not a G7 nation economically anymore its about 10–11th and falling. Italy isn’t either its about 8 and falling. These are the old powers, and they know it. Four of them are currently in the EU which basically take away a lot of economic policies away from the individual states. For a forum focused on economic policies that makes it pretty ineffective. Canada also has limited say given how it is tied into NAFTA. Japans trading partners, only 1 (the US) is in the G7.
The UK and US leaders meet regularly anyway. Japans leader meets US, UK, EU leaders regularly outside of the G7. It had some relevance in the 1970’s, but economically we have all moved along way since then.
The G20 on the other hand contains all the prominent and influential countries for the future. There are several non-aligned and several you might consider US rivals. These are the countries that are the future. These are the ones that most leaders will rarely get the opportunity to meet with. These are the countries with opportunities, the growth. There are many issues to be discussed interesting conversations to be had.
