Would I become an ***** if I socialize with *****s?

Will I become less intelligent if I socialize with unintelligent people?


There's two different questions baked into this thought:

Will you become like the people you're around?

Are the people around you unintelligent?

I think the first one is easier; you do tend to become more like the people you surround yourself with. The subjects that come up in conversation, the arguments and discussion you have, the activities you do, all end up moulding you. Intelligence fits right in there. Like any muscle, critical thinking and general knowledge require activity and exercise to keep healthy. The less you question yourself and update your world view, the more you stagnate, become complacent and that can roughly equate with a lack of intelligence.

The second half you're going to have to feel out. I'd love the idea that everyone is intelligent in their own way, but since you've asked the question I presume you have an idea about what kind of intelligence you mean. If it's general knowledge for instance, and everyone you spend time with only talks about sports, you're going to know a lot about sport, but you will not be challenged or introduced to new things in other areas—cue stagnation.

This happens with everything, so we often end up having differing friend groups for different areas of our lives.
