Edema results whenever small blood vessels become "leaky" and release fluid into nearby tissues. Edema is a general response of the body to injury or inflammation. Infections, medications, pregnancy, and many medical problems can cause edema. Edema is often, but not always, associated with other medical conditions so be sure to contact your health care provider.
