Shahristani: Iraq's share of 6 million barrels is very low, and Baghdad, but expects the share was less than the share of Saudi Arabia
Iraqi Oil Minister Hussain al-Shahristani said on Thursday that Iraq's production quota of six million barrels per day under the quota system, OPEC will be extremely low and that Baghdad expects not less than its share for Saudi Arabia's share of the largest producers in OPEC.
Saudi Arabia accounts for little more than eight million b - j. Iraq is the only member of OPEC members, twelve exempt from the quota system after years of war and sanctions. Shahristani told Reuters in an interview when asked whether he expected to have a share equal to Baghdad, Saudi Arabia's share "Yes, we expect no less of Iraq's share of any other country in the OPEC."
He said: "We certainly do not believe that four million barrels per day quota acceptable or reasonable for the production of Iraq." He said that the quota of six million b - j will be very low.
Iraq had strengthened its position in any future negotiations, after holding a series of agreements which may lead to increased production capacity to around 12 million b - j within seven years from 2.5 million b - j at the moment.
Shahristani said the decline in recent oil prices is not linked to market fundamentals of supply and demand was linked to the financial crisis in Europe. Oil was trading near the level of 73 dollars a barrel today, which is closer to the minimum in a range of 70 to 80 dollars, which it says many countries in OPEC, to be fair to producers and consumers. Oil fell below 70 dollars this week, which he said al-Shahristani, that is low enough not to encourage investment in future projects to boost capacity.
"What we have noticed over the past few days is the volatility in the market does not need any interference from OPEC at the moment."
Shahristani said that OPEC will continue to monitor the volatility of oil prices to see if the prices go on a downward trend before taking any action.
"I think that the oil market will correct itself, prices will revert to what it was two or three weeks ... what did not worsen the crisis in Europe."
Shahristani said he did not expect to change the levels of OPEC supply in October, when the cartel meets next week to discuss the policy of supplies, if oil prices and supply and demand at current levels
