Erbil, Kurdistan - Iraq - On his first visit to Erbil, US National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley stressed the important role of the Kurdistan Region in Iraq’s political process. He said he came to obtain information firsthand and to explain US policy, which included support for the national unity government in Baghdad. He was accompanied by US Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad and other US Government officials.
During the open and productive meetings, Mr Hadley conveyed President Bush's commitment to the project to establish a free democratic, federal and pluralistic Iraq.
Mr Hadley affirmed his government's partnership with the Kurdistan Region in promoting the democratic process and fighting terrorism. He said he was impressed with the economic development activities he had seen. He learned of issues of importance to the people of the Region, including electricity, fuel, the absence of US companies investing in the Region, and difficulties with Baghdad regarding funding and the management of oil resources.
Ambassador Khalilzad expressed his appreciation to President Masoud Barzani for his central role in the democratic process and asked him to continue to play his part. President Barzani offered reassurances of the Kurdistan Region's commitment to the Constitution of Iraq and its determination to stand by the political process and continue taking a positive participatory approach. He said the Region's leadership will continue to work with all communities and with the central government in meeting the challenges of national reconciliation, overcoming differences, and power sharing.

Iraq to hold first trade event
MANAMA, Bahrain, 03 November 2006 (UPI)
Iraq will hold its first international trade event since the toppling of Saddam Hussein in an effort to gain international investment and reconstruction help.
The event, announced in Manama by Iraq Ambassador Ghassan Muhsen Hussein, will be held March 24-26 at the Bahrain International Exhibition Center in Manama.
"We are ... convinced that Bahrain, which is at the center of financial and economic activities in the region, is the ideal choice for such a major event of our government," he was quoted Thursday by the Gulf Daily News.
The event is being organized by the Iraq government in association with Bahrain's Magnum Events and Exhibitions Management company.
Jamil Wafa, chairman of MEEM's parent organization, said the show was expected to draw more than 12,000 attendees, including Iraq government decision makers.
"It (the trade show) will pave the road towards coordination and huge investments," Wafa said. "It is a milestone in Iraq's progress towards new business opportunities."
