    Daily Market Commentary for August 6, 2009

    Unemployment Benefits

    Labor Department announced today that unemployment dropped to a year low of 247,000 jobs in July, as compared to a projected 320,000 jobs. (read more at Millennium-Traders.Com)

    Economic data released today:

    Nonfarm Payrolls:
    U.S. July Nonfarm Payrolls down by 247K compared to consensus of a drop by 275K; U.S. July Manufacturing Payrolls fell 52K; U.S. Service-Producing Payrolls fell 119K; U.S. June Payrolls revised to a drop by 443K from a drop by 467K.

    Unemployment Rate:
    U.S. June Unemployment left unrevised at 9.5%; U.S. Unemployment Rate Drops first time since April '08; U.S. July Unemployment Rate 9.4% compared to consensus of 9.7%.

    Average Hourly Earnings:
    U.S. July Average Hourly Earnings rose $0.03 to $18.56.

    Average Weekly Hours:
    U.S. workweek posts first rise since August 2008; U.S. July Overall Workweek rose 0.1 hour to 33.1 hours.

    3:00 Consumer Credit:
    U.S. June Consumer Credit decreased $10.3 billion; drop in U.S. consumer credit is fifth in a row; most since 1991; May Consumer Credit revised to down $5.4 billion from down $3.2 billion.

    If you count the discouraged workers the rate went from 10.1 to 10.2.

    So it's a tad misleading to use the UE rate that they like to promote.

    The real UE rate still went up a tad. But it's still good that it's going up has slowed.
