Isn't a CPA only good to help control finances? To me, thinking outside of the box means stepping away from the norm and daring to do your own thing. To get rid of the security blanket and do your own thang. Most successful and powerful people has learned to think outside of the box.

Most female members of my family did one of 2 things. Either worked in the health field (nursing) or in the education field (teacher). So, this was expected of me. When I decided that health nor education was for me and i wanted to dare to "think outside of the box" I was immediately torn down by family and many freinds. I was assured of the securities of health benefits, retirement packages and the works and in many cases people would put their ideas aside and please others, which is what i did, but was unhappy. I always felt that there was another calling for me. So I decided to try my idea and after many attempts I found my niche and have never looked back. It is funny now that I am doing my thing that my family now looks up to me and other members of the family want to try what I am doing.

    Interesting,

Since thinking outside the box may mean different things to different people, it is good idea to see how many examples we will see. For me, it simply means not going with the flow, the norm, the usual. I have always been one who thinks outside the box, and my story says it all.

I started my career with a Fortune 5 company, and thought this was great for it was what everyone was doing at the time, landing a job you could retire with. (g) That was the first mistake I learned, there is no such thing as a lifetime job anymore, so this required an adjustment of not following the crowd, so lesson number one, don't follow, lead.

I put in ten years and went through three merger acquisitions and all the politics that goes with it. I finally woke up and said this is not for me. So I began thinking outside the box where I could make a difference in my own life, and not be forced to do it the old corporate style of the same old same old. You have to think outside the box if you want personal success, as in your own business. Sure, you could move up in management and think this is success, or become top salesperson, etc., but in my experience, unless you are calling your own shots in your own business, working for someone else is so in the box it is not worth talking about.

I have always been one who looks for a better way to the same end. In the corporate world, this was considered a negative depending on your manager or supervisor. I found that it was a negative to present new formulas or strategies which were out of the box, as it was looked upon by my managers as a threat that I would be after their job, which I was. (g) I can't tell you how many times I saw this happen in the business world, fear of loss made many managers do the unthinkable, suppress out of box thinking. Once I saw this as a major obstacle, I quit.

Simply put, I had many out of the box concepts which I felt would work better than in the box. I utilized many of these in my own business and was able to not only retain clients I had developed with my former company, but to also gain more through efficiencies I had tried to introduce with my former company. Amazing, but after taking away hundreds of thousands in revenues, I was offered that position of manager, talk about ironic, you have leave a company in order to fight your way up the corporate ladder. (g)

In short, if you are an out of box thinker, then you need to be in your own business. If you are satisfied with having just a job, and as usual, afraid to rock the boat with suggestions, then you will be in the box for your whole life. The sooner you can break out, the better. It took me ten years to learn this in corporate America, but better to have learned and act on it, rather than never learn at all.

    Good luck to all, Mike
