The UK has a few frustrating characteristics:

A horrendous drinking culture in large parts of society, which equates dangerous drinking with peer acceptability

Endemic anti-intellectualism, which reflects itself in poor status and reward for teachers,
and boys (in particular) being ashamed of their academic talents

Income inequality that has created a fairly fixed underclass of multi-generational poverty, ill-education, and lack of work

A low murmur of racism in the background of many political discussions

More jingoistic nationalism than I am comfortable with
