Closed cell foam is strong, dense insulation that can be sprayed or installed in what resembles a solid form. Its characteristics as a foam include good compress and recover qualities with a primarily plastic composition.
Closed cell foam has balloon-like cells that hold nitrogen gas, preventing substance passage in low pressure situations. It is produced using a decomposing chemical powder under pressure and heat. The closed cell effect is from the nitrogen gas released in this process. As a sponge rubber, it shouldn’t be confused with open cell foam, which has more open and interconnected bubbles for air, chemicals or water to pass through in an uncompressed form. Closed cell has a much higher plastic content and less air pockets compared to open cell variations.
