'Old age' is characterized by a progressive accumulation of damage, inability to repair this damage and eventual dysfunction. When organs or tissues accumulate damage, these are prone to failure and it is quite common that there is significant damage in several (not one or two) tissues. This may translate into clinical manifestations such as cancer and heart disease, as well as infections and other non lethal diseases. Overall it is the progressive failure of our tissues that contribute to death and not merely one specific event.
